Summary
As Wednesday expands the Addams family’s presence in Season 2, both old faces and new characters come into the spotlight — most notably, Wednesday’s parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams, her brother Pugsley, Grandmama, and Uncle Fester. Speculation about the return of the iconic Addams family mansion has proven true, adding a rich layer to the show’s setting. While the mansion will feature in the series, Nevermore Academy remains at the heart of theWednesdaynarrative.
But here’s the thing: Morticia and Gomez can tango and canoodle all they want at the Addams mansion, but there needs to be a compelling reason for theirextended presence at Nevermore. In Season 1, they dropped Wednesday off and returned for Parents' Weekend — only to get entangled in an old murder case that clawed its way back to the surface. As of now, nothing explains why they are lingering around Nevermore.WednesdaySeason 2 needs to justify their presence around the school.
What Are Morticia And Gomez Doing On Netflix’sWednesday?
Morticia and Gomez Addams are hands-on for the most part. After leaving Wednesday in Principal Weems' care, Morticia gifts her daughter amagical obsidian necklaceimbued with special powers and a crystal ball for communication. They embrace Wednesday’s dark wit and proudly nod at her flair for mayhem, recognizing it as part of the Addams family legacy. However, Morticia and Gomez are conspicuous by their absence in theWednesdayseason finale. Despite Wednesday facing a brutal attack from Thornhill and Crackstone, neither parent showed up. Instead, they send Lurch to pick her up, making their absence feel odd and bizarre during this critical moment.
So, what could justify Morticia and Gomez' unusually heightened presence at Nevermore in Season 2? Much has been made of Morticia’s old rivalry with the late Principal Weems, whose life was cut short during the Thornhill incident. With Weems gone, and a male successor set to join, it could be that Nevermore longs for a strong matriarchal presence. Or, Morticia speaks of a family secret with deadly consequences — one that may involve that broken tombstone. Could there be a long-buried incident that ties the Addams family to Nevermore, making it necessary forMorticia and Gomezto remain at the school? Only time will tell.
Morticia And Gomez' Storyline InWednesdaySeason 2
The Season 2 trailer offers plenty of fodder for eagle-eyed viewers looking to deduce Morticia and Gomez' roles and storyline. For starters, the couple is seen accompanying both of their children to Nevermore Academy per usual. Morticia stands near the hearse with her family, asking Wednesday how she feels about willingly returning to school. Later, she is seen beside Gomez at Camp Jericho, keeping a protective hand on Pugsley while looking at a distant, disturbing scene. Morticia also appears with Wednesday in a tense scene where Enid can be seen behind bars in the background. At this moment, Wednesday calmly tells her,“Do not worry about me, mother, I do my best work in the dark.“Morticia’s primary role in the teaser trailer is to warn her daughter not to dig too deeply into thefamily’s secrets, warning her that they have deadly consequences.
In the Sneak Peek: Addams Family trailer, Morticia stands in the background as Pugsley shakes hands with Eugene. She also fences with Wednesday, while Gomez acts like the ever-devoted companion by her side. Several such scenes suggest Morticia and Gomez’s heightened presence at Nevermore. But all of this raises questions about Tim Burton’s statement: how does the show bring the family to Nevermore?
How Involved Are Morticia & Gomez Their Children’s Lives At Nevermore Academy?
Per Miles Millar,Wednesday’s creator and showrunner:
“The scope has expanded in terms of character arcs, and it’s really fun to see them explore a lot more of Nevermore.”
This quote suggests that with Morticia, Gomez, Pugsley, and Lurch receiving expanded character arcs, the show has found a way to justify their presence at the seat of action; i.e., Nevermore. In the Sneak Peek: Addams Family, Morticia is excited about fencing. This hints at a possible job for her at school, perhaps as Nevermore’s new fencing instructor. If true, this role is the perfect way to keep her and, by extension, Gomez around at Nevermore.
The Addams family is deeply tied to Nevermore. Wednesday is a legacy student, giving her parents a good reason to stay longer. With the deaths of Principal Weems andthe botanical sciences teacher, Marilyn Thornhill, who turned out to be a homicidal maniac, Nevermore Academy has lost two of its female staffers, creating a vacuum at the school. Morticia, once a star student who brought laurels to Nevermore, is in a unique position to fill this role.
Amid all the speculation surrounding Morticia and Gomez’s increased involvement at the school, it cannot be denied that each parent brings a unique skill set that can be explored within Nevermore’s environment. With Pugsley now enrolled at Nevermore, showrunner Alfred Gough reveals that the season will witness the evolution of a father-son storyline, bringing a fresh dimension tothe Addams family dynamic.
WednesdaySeason 2 is set to release in two parts, with the first four episodes on August 6, followed by the final four on September 3.
