The first six minutes ofWednesday’s Season 2 premiere, “Here We Woe Again,” show the lead reflecting on her eventful summer, utilizing her time away from Nevermore Academy to hone her psychic ability. Soon after, she turns her attention to a long-standing obsession that she’s harbored since the age of six. This thread draws a direct connection between the eerie dolls seen in theWednesdaySeason 2 teaser trailer and a mysterious scalper figure.

Wednesday’s encounter with the man she dubs theKansas City Scalperis a tale of courage and unshakable resolve. It ends, unsurprisingly, in her favor, with the serial killer landing himself in hot water. But just how does Wednesday handle him?

WednesdaySeason 2 Drops Breadcrumbs About Wednesday’s Childhood

In the aftermath of the Thornhill-Crackstone disaster, Nevermore Academy shut down for the rest of the semester, and Lurch drove Wednesday home. She filled her timegaining control over her psychic ability, drawing from Goody’s book of spells. This was six weeks before investigating a serial killer who’d remained elusive since her childhood. Six weeks later, she wound up bound and gagged in his dimly-lit basement, letting him believe he had the upper hand in this “chance” encounter.

Wednesday’s summer of isolation ends on a triumphant note—not only does she get her psychic ability under control, but she also confronts this killer head-on. It unfolds like this:

Haley Joel Osment as the Kansas City Scalper in Wednesday.

As Wednesday remains trapped in this serial killer’s lair, her voiceover begins. She explains that six weeks ago,she enlisted Thing’s help to track down America’s most elusive serial killer—someone she had brought up during a primary school show and tell. As always, Thing delivered in helping her psychically locate the killer by stealing a piece of evidence from one of the crime scenes: a rubber duck encased in a transparent sphere, which Wednesday described as:

The Scalper’s 11th victim dropped her prized bowling ball when she was snatched.

Wednesday gifts Enid a doll in Wednesday.

Clutching her mother’s obsidian necklace — an heirloom that helps her enhance her psychic ability — Wednesday finally sees a vision of the Scalper. But to get to him, she has to go through an airport screening.

And so, this explainsthe mysterious airport scene, where Wednesday is seen attempting to board a plane with Thing tucked away in her bag. During the security screening, an officer’s wand starts buzzing. An unbothered Wednesday starts pulling out many prohibited items, raising a few raised eyebrows, and prompting the question:

Which part of prohibited items don’t you understand, young lady?

To which Wednesday replies, “The part where you believe that cramming hundreds of people into a metal tube flying through the air creates some utopia where weapons aren’t needed.” Finally, it’s not the brass knuckles or concealed knives that cause trouble. Ironically, it’s Thing’s sunscreen that exceeds the 3.4 ounce limit that raises the alarm. WhenThing’s bones show upon the X-ray machine, Wednesday tells the TSA agents that he is a prosthetic hand and that she is headed to the Junior Embalmer’s Convention in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Scalper’s Basement Scene Changes Everything

Wednesday finally arrives at the Scalper’s home in Missouri, who it turns out, is functioning under the guise of a pooch pampering business. She confronts this pet groomer named Chet without hesitation, her voice cold and hostile, asking if his serial killer services are listed online too. The confrontation is simple and deliberate — Wednesday is there to end the Scalper’s reign of terror. She uses the stun gun, but he quickly grabs her arm, which triggers her vision ofsome seriously creepy dollsscattered across a basement.

As Wednesday collapses, the Scalper moves her inside quickly. He unlocks a series of heavy latches on a giant basement door and looks at her in anger, but she stares back. Inside the basement, there are countless dolls dressed in old-fashioned frocks placed on the shelves. At the center, eight are seated around a table, each with an empty teacup and saucers. Wednesday sits among them, at the head of the table.

It’s immediately clear that Wednesday is going to be the Scalper’s newest victim. He wheels in a metal cart lined with surgical instruments, looking disturbingly happy. He sits beside her and pulls out aWednesday look-alike dollfrom beneath the cart.

I made you a gift. That’s how I remember all my special guests.

“Let me show you some of my own handiwork,” Wednesday says coolly, while turning her head to a doll beside her. As the doll turns her head to the Scalper, its eyes open, and Thing leaps out. In the chaos that erupts, Thing grabs the Scalper by his face while Wednesday unties herself. She lets Thing deal with him, and he quickly signals a tap-out, indicating the Scalper has been temporarily dealt with.

Wednesday’s Psychic Ability Reaches New Heights In Season 2

Wednesday Hunts A Serial Killer

Thing jumps onto the table, pointing at Wednesday. She realizes she’s cried black tears, but quickly dismisses it as a minor psychic glitch, warning Thing to keep it to himself. The final shot of the basement scene sees Wednesday lift a large knife, with eyes fixed on the Scalper, exclaiming, “Let’s play dolls!”

According toWednesdayco-creator and showrunner Miles Millar, black tears will streak down Wednesday’s cheeks throughout Season 2 [PerNetflix]. He explains, “This season, Wednesday’s psychic visions change. She’s spent her summer vacation mastering her psychic ability, but then something goes wrong, soshe returns to Nevermorewith her psychic ability glitching. Over the course of the season, it’s a struggle to recover her power.“Wednesdayco-creator Alfred Gough describes Chet as a beauty school dropout turned serial killer. It follows logically that Wednesday’s serial killer hunt ends with her using Chet’s hair for a doll and later gifting it to Enid at Nevermore, who calls it “a li’l creepy” but admits its hair is “super soft.”

WednesdaySeason 2 undoubtedly raises the stakes, intensifying Wednesday’s psychic powers and her obsession with a serial killer who has been lurking since she was a child, or longer. The black tears are a haunting symbol of something she has yet to confront — indicating that a grey area awaits to enthrall the fandom this August.
