Summary
Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool has quickly become one of the most popular superhero characters in the movie industry, and adding him to the Marvel Cinematic Universe proved to be a popular decision. Fans had been waiting for it, andDeadpool & Wolverinedidn’t disappoint when it finally arrived, bringing all of the R-rated humor and fourth-wall-breaking moments that people had hoped to see.
Despite any doubts people might’ve had,Deadpool and Wolverineended up grossing $1.338 billion worldwide while achieving the record for the biggest opening weekend in the history of R-rated cinema. Reynolds was hands-on with how the movie came to be, not only via his acting but also in terms of the creative decisions that were made. However, he almost took Wade Wilson in a totally different direction, which would have been a radical change.
Reynolds has pitched a plethora of ideas for Marvel over the years, and he has been open about them. Some have been entertaining, and others have seemed totally ridiculous. However, during an appearance onThe Box Office Podcast, Reynolds revealed his original plan for WilsoninDeadpool and Wolverine.
There’s always the thought of killing Deadpool in the last one. Again, it’s like listening to the movie. Me, [editors] Shane Reid, Dean Zimmerman, and [director] Shawn Levy must have reworked that third act for 45 days straight.
Ultimately, Deadpool was kept alive within the MCU, which isn’t overly surprising given how financially successful the character has proven to be, both within this franchise and beforehand. However, there have been no confirmed plans for the character moving forward, and at this stage, Reynolds is not confirmed to be part of thecast forAvengers: Doomsday.Still, given the multiversal experience the upcoming Marvel film is set to provide, there is always the opportunity for him to make a cameo appearance. That’s something that many fans would like to see, as having Deadpool interact with other Marvel stars has the potential to be highly entertaining.
There have been rumors that a futureDeadpoolmovie is in the works, which would see him team with a select group of X-Men. Reynolds prefers the Merc with a Mouth to be part of an ensemble, as he’s made it clear that he thinks the character is at its best in that environment. That’s something that is now possible, and with theX-Men set to be part ofAvengers: Doomsday,it’s clear that Marvel will start focusing on the mutants moving forward. Having Deadpool be part of that world would make sense, as he’s already established in the MCU, which would allow him to attract an audience from the start.
Marvel has lots of options regarding Deadpool moving forward, and that’s because the character wasn’t killedinDeadpool & Wolverine, despite it being teased in the film. Ultimately, it would have been too soon to kill Deadpool in what was his MCU debut, as fans want to see the character explored in further detail, even if he’s fairly limited in terms of how he can be used. However, just because the talkative superhero wasn’t killed inDeadpool & Wolverinedoesn’t mean that it can’t happen in the future, with this teased idea now being something Marvel might consider.
