Sonyrecently addressed the PlayStation 6, claiming that the next generation of the console is currently at the “top of its mind.” It’s now been five years sinceSonyreleased the PS5, and in many ways, it feels like its lifespan is just getting started. The early days of the PS5 were notoriously difficult, as Sony had to deal with shortages brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. This has made the PS5 seem a lot younger than it actually is, and with its strange life cycle comes a console generation that has yet to see its full potential.

A common view among a lot of gamers since the PS5 launched is that the console’s offerings have been far and few-between. This is subjective, but it does seem at times that Sony hasn’t offered the same number of exclusives as past generations, especially when it comes to single-player stories. Many of its biggest past titles, likeGod of War Ragnarok,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, andHorizon Forbidden Westwere all still available on the PS4, making the purchase of a PS5 seem unnecessary. The current generation of Sony consoles has seen some high points, but when it comes togenerating hype for the PS6, it could be falling flat.

While the PS6 Could Be Only a Few Years Away, the PS5 Feels Like It’s Just Starting to Hit Its Stride

2024 Marked Some Major Highs and Significant Lows for the PS5

Last year was filled with hits and misses from Sony, but more importantly, it seemed like the PS5 was finally beginning to get some unique exclusives that were worth considering getting a PS5 for.Helldivers 2has been a celebrated approach to the live-service model, whileAstro Botfelt like a love letter to PlayStation’s platformer history.

Of course, there were notorious launches likethe ill-fatedConcord, but when it comes to a console identity, last year felt fairly optimistic when it came to the PS5’s future. TheSilent Hill 2remake andStellar Bladealso rounded out the year with solid exclusive offerings, and this year has some highlights, too.

The Midnight Walkwas a wonderfully unique stop-motion tale, while the upcomingDeath Stranding 2andGhost of Yoteiare set to be the PS5 heavy-hitters this year. Despite this trio, 2025 still doesn’t have as robust of a roster as the likes of the PS4.

Right now,Sarosis one of the only PS5 exclusives confirmed for 2026. Beyond that,Intergalactic: The Heretic ProphetandMarvel’s Wolverineare highly anticipated.

The Success of the PS4 Made the Promise of the PS5 That Much More Exciting

The PS4 was a massive success for Sony, and its impressive game roster is mainly to thank for that.Bloodborne,The Last of Us Part 2,Uncharted 4,Marvel’s Spider-Man,Horizon Zero Dawn,Ghost of Tsushima, andGod of Warall helped make up the console’s lineup. So, once the PS5 was announced, the expectations were incredibly high.

Between the early supply issues andSony canceling various live-service projects, the PS5’s offerings have unfortunately been sparse. There are definitely gems to consider, but when it comes to the divisive legacy of the PS5, its successor may have trouble generating as much hype until its launch titles are revealed.

Sony has yet to confirm a potential launch target for the PS6. There has been speculation that it could be late 2027 or 2028, but any discussion of a launch timeframe should be taken lightly until confirmed by Sony.
