Summary

DC Studios and James Gunn are hoping thatSupermanshapes up to be the biggest movie of the summer in a few scant weeks. Meanwhile, the main star of the film recently claimed he plays three personas in the movie, which won’t be all too surprising to die-hard Man of Steel fanatics.

Although 2024’s animatedCreature Commandosseries was technically the first installment in the brand-new DC Universe fromWarner Bros.and DC Studios, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind thatSupermanwill serve as the actual first barometer forpublic interest in a rebooted DC slate of films and shows. An adult cartoon adaptation covering a D-list group of DC Comics anti-heroes that goes straight to streaming doesn’t exactly scream “big-budget blockbuster.” No, just like 2013’sMan of Steelserved as the kickoff point for the then-fledgling DC Extended Universe (or DCEU, if you’re nasty), the upcomingSupermanmovie will set the overall tone and audience expectation going forward. Mirroring the likes of Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill before him, David Corenswet is a relatively unknown face to many moviegoers, but the man seems to understand what audiences want from the Man of Tomorrow. At least, that’s how he’s come off in recent interviews promoting the film.

Numerous members of the cast and crew ofSupermanrecently sat down for a massive interview withEntertainment Weeklyand, of course, David Corenswet was included in the proceedings. You can’t do a huge exclusive promoting a superhero film without interviewing the actor playingthe titular character, right? During the conversation, Corenswet mentioned that he’s playing more than just Clark Kent and Superman in the film.“We also had this third character, of who Clark is when he’s in a room with somebody who knows both sides of him,“Corenswet explained.“He’s not really playing the character of Superman, but he’s also not really playing the role of Clark, either.”

“It’s a personality that only comes out with his parents and with Lois, once she really gets to know everything about him.”

Superman’s David Corenswet Believes The Man Of Steel Has Three Distinct Personas

Corenswet’s analysis of Clark Kent makes perfect sense.Superman has to be the light of the world, the torch for the triumph of good over evil. In many ways, he can’t showcase human emotion while on the job because he has to be more than human… he’sSuperman, after all. As far as the Clark Kent most people know, the one who puts on a pair of glasses and becomes an everyman who works at the Daily Planet, he too is simply a projection. Clark obviously doesn’t want people to know he is Superman, so he puts on a bit of an aloof facade at times to throw people off the scent. Part of what made Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the character so beloved is the way he would act differently as Clark and Supes.

Anyone who has reada heaping helping ofSupermancomicsover the years knows that the lifeblood of nearly a century’s worth of stories is the relationship Clark has with his parents and Lois. The three people in the entire world (sorry, Bruce Wayne) who know him best are Jonathan Kent, Martha Kent, and Lois Lane, simply because they are the privileged few who understand the immense burden of being Superman and a regular guy at the same time. Batman and Wonder Woman come close, but being a superhero with your own adventures and experiences means there will always be some sort of arm’s length between you.

Fans should justifiably be excited about Corenswet’s obvious passion for and understanding ofClark Kent. Hopefully, it translates well to film, andSupermanis the hit everyone wants it to be.
