Summary
The White Walkers were long believed to be an ancient myth until multiple characters inGame of Thronesconfirmed their existence. The first mention of their kind came right in the series' opening scene, when a Night’s Watch deserter named Will claimed to have had a firsthand encounter with them. He was delirious from the chilling experience, repeatedly insisting he had seen the White Walkers. Ned Stark executed him for desertion, dismissing his warnings as madness. But as the show continued, the White Walkers reinforced their presence as a central threat to humanity.
The White Walkers are humanoid ice creaturesfrom beyond the Wall who serve the Night King. One of the most menacing forces inThrones, they made it deep into human-inhabited lands by Season 8, but were destroyed by the alliance of the living, thanks in part to Arya Stark. Besides Arya, otherGame of Thronescharacters have faced and killed White Walkers. But who can be considered the strongest of them?
Killed A Walker With A Dragonglass Dagger
Samwell Tarly came face to face with a White Walker during his prolonged Great Ranging expedition beyond the Wall. Following the mutiny at Craster’s Keep and the tragic death of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, Sam fled with Gilly and her newborn boy in a bid for survival. On their way back to the Wall, he drove a Dragonglass dagger into a White Walker, killing it instantly.
Samwell killed a Walker in a moment of extraordinary courage, but he is neither a warrior nor a fighter. A scholarly man, he spent most of his time reading, seeking knowledge, and often finding solutions to the existential threats facing humanity. Samwell was forced into the Night’s Watch by his father, Lord Randyll Tarly, because he sought to make a warrior/fighter out of him. Even at Castle Black, Samwell spent his time with Maester Aemon, reading and acquiring knowledge that proved invaluable in the Great War.
He was easily able to deduce thatJon Snow’s sword, Longclaw, was of Valyrian Steel, and therefore capable of shattering White Walkers into tiny shards of ice. Samwell eventually asked to be relieved from the duties of the Night’s Watch to become a Maester of the Citadel. He studied history, politics, and healing — knowledge that proved useful in the years that followed.
3Meera Reed
Hurled A Dragonglass Spear At A White Walker
As Hodor and Meera prepare to leave the cave of the Three-Eyed Raven to escape the Night King, White Walkers, and an army of the Wights close in. Bran is deep in his vision while Meera tries her best to wake him up.The Children of the Foresthurl their magic grenades to deter the dead from marching, but their efforts prove futile. Amid the chaos, Meera kills a White Walker using a dragonglass-tipped spear. She also pleads with Bran to wake up and warg into Hodor, which leads to the unforgettable “Hold the door” moment.
Meera, daughter of Ned Stark’s companion, Ser Howland Reed, is an adventurous young woman. She kills countless Wights in this onslaught, relying on her instincts when all else fails. Ever since her introduction in “Dark Wings, Dark Words,” she has proven her resilience in the arduous journey with Bran. Though Meera may not have the battle-hardened experiences of Jon or the lethal assassin training of Arya, she holds her own as a White Walker slayer.
2Arya Stark
Killed The Night King
Arya crushed the ilk of the White Walkers by stabbing the Night King usingthe catspaw dagger. At the Battle of Winterfell’s climax, she sneaks up on the Night King as he zeroes in on Bran/ the Three-Eyed Raven. Though the Night King turns around and grabs Arya by the throat, she releases the dagger and catches it with her other hand, stabbing him in the chest. The Night King, the Walkers, and the Wights all fall, and the battle ends.
Though Arya has killed quite a few notorious men onThrones, this killing is pivotal. She has precision, shape-shifting abilities, and is great at one-on-one dueling. Her training with the Faceless Men makes her an assassin unlike any other.
1Jon Snow
