Summary

As one of the threePokemontypes trainers must choose from at the start of themainline series of games, the Grass-type has had its fair share of powerfulPokemon.Fan favorites such as Bulbasaur, Celebi, and Treeko have made Grass one of the most popular types in thePokemonseries.

InPokemonbattles, trainers worldwide have specialized in Grass-types. Numerous trainers have cemented themselves in the upper echelons of importance and power as thestrongest trainersinPokemonand as specialists in using Grass pocket monsters to dominate the battlefield, whether at aPokemongym or during an Alohan Trial.

Tsareena

The weakest trainer mentioned here, Mallow is the trial captain of Akala Island in thePokemon Sun and Moonseries of games. Despite being a grass specialist, Mallow has a fairly lackluster lineup ofPokemon, with her strongest team consisting of three level 60 Pocket Monsters, such as Trevenant and Shiinotic, that put up little challenge. For that reason, Mallow comes at the top of this list as the least powerful Grass-type specialist.

Roserade

Gym leader Erika of Celadon City Gym, otherwise known as the “Nature-Loving Princess,” is a powerful Grass-type trainer and one of thegym leadersof the Kanto region. Players first faced Erika inPokemon Red and Blueand later in their subsequent remakes, includingHeart Gold and Soul Silver.

Pokemon Masters Ramos Weepinbell

In the latter, Erika’s full might is on display, with players able to fight her with a full team all in the mid-50s to mid-60s. At level 60, Tangrowth is the strongest Pokemon on her team and her strongest known Pocket Monster. While not weak by any stretch of the imagination, Erika is weaker than most of the other Grass specialists here.

From the initial first battle with Cilan inPokemon Black and Whiteas Striaton City gym leader, it is easy to think of Cilan as a bit of a pushover trainer with two low-level Pokemon at levels 12 and 14. However, upon introspection, in the game’s sequel,Pokemon Black and White 2, Cilan reinvents himself.

The improved gym leader has three Pokemonto his name, all in the mid to high sixties, for players to battle if they choose Oshawatt as the game starter. Due to hisPokemon levels and admirable journey to become a better trainer, Cilan deserves a spot above Erika.

Gogoat

Not much of a trainer from his initial appearance, Ramos is a competent Grass specialist and a prominent Kalos gym leader. An older man who resembles a gardener in looks, Ramos is a green-fingered Pokemon trainer whose Pocket Monsters reach level 70 at their max.

Despite only owning two, these Pokemonare powerful, making him a mid-tier Grass-type trainer who does not come close to the likes of Gardenia in terms of power but has the skill to beat the likes of Cilan.

Sinnoh gym leader Gardenia can be a particularly tricky encounter for players as the second gym leader they face as they traverse the Sinnoh region. Her particularly strong signature Pokemon, Roserade, can dish out damage like there’s no tomorrow, even at level 22 during her first battle.

Unfortunately, Roserade becomes no less challenging as players rematch Gardenia throughout the Sinnoh games, with the powerful Grass-type Pokemon reaching a whopping level 72 in power when rematched inPokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Gardenia has a host of strong Pokemon in this rematch, including a level 68 Torterra and a level 70 Sunflora. Hence, Gardenia is one of thestrongest Grass-typetrainers, placing her high on this list and far above fellow gym leaders such as Erika, Cilan, and Ramos.

73

Appletun

74

Milo is an exceptionally strong Grass-type Pokemontrainer in the Galar region. The leader of Turffield’s gym, Milo’s power goes from strength to strength as players progress throughPokemon Sword and Shield. Milo’s strongest team consists of six Pocket Monsters in the low to mid-70s, with a particularly strong Appletun at level 74 capable of gigantamaxing.

Milo’s strongest team is impressive and a testament to his mastery of Grass-types as a specialist. Second only to Brassius and beating all other grass masters on this list, Milo stands out as a brilliant grass Pokemontrainer.

Sudowoodo

81

The strongest Grass-type Pokemon trainer accolade goes to Mister Verdant Virtuoso himself, Brassius. And for good reason. The Artazon Gym leader is by a country mile the strongest Grass-type trainer. Topping level 80 in power, his best team consists of six Pokemon, all level 80 and above, including a level 81 Sudowoodo, a level 80 Vileplume, and a level 80 Arboliva.

Fought in the League Club Room inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, players are tested against the best Grass-type trainer inPokemonwith a maxed-out team. A Grass-type master and one of the strongest trainers generally, Brassius is at the top of the pecking order in terms of power, even rivaling the likes of theinfamous trainer, Red.
