Summary
Stephen Kinghas mastered any type of scary story, whether he’s writing abouta teenager with psychic powers who is unpopular or a newcomer to a small town that is actually full of vampires. While some of the movie adaptations based on his popular short stories and books are more memorable and compelling than others, there’s one underrated movie that fans can watch for free on YouTube.
King is a great go-to person for movie and TV show recs, fromthe Apple sci-fi seriesConstellationtothe ’80s horror filmThe Stepfather. Since so much of his work is adapted for the big screen, fans are always hopeful that he has positive things to say about the movies that bring his eerie characters and strange settings to life. There is one movie adaptation that King called “terrifying,” according toUPI.com, and it has a fairly impressive 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is also free for fans to check out on YouTube.
Stephen King’s 1408 Is Available To Watch For Free On YouTube
The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s1408,which was released in 2007,is now free on YouTube. The film hasa 79% Rotten Tomatoes score anda 61%ratingon the Popcornmeter, which is lower than some of King’s other movies, includingIT,which has an 85% rating. However, this is still fairly impressive since some of the movies based on King’s beloved work can be divisive andnot everyone can agree on the most memorable adaptation.
1408stars John Cusack as a writer named Mike Enslinand, likeJames Caan’s protagonist Paul Sheldon in Rob Reiner’sMisery, he finds himself at the center of a horrifying situation.Mikechecks into a hotel called The Dolphinand while he’s told to avoid room 1408, he of course jumps right in and asks to stay there. Like many of the movies based on King’s short stories, novellas, and novels,1408has a great cast, including Tony Shalhoub.Samuel L. Jackson plays Gerald Olin, the manager of the hotel who attempts to warn Mike and who knows the truth about this creepy place.
1408may not be the only haunted hotel story of King’s since this is also the setting for one of hismost famous horror movies,The Shining. However, it stands out since it focuses on a more relatable and grounded main character. Mike is a regular person who can’t help but be curious about the hotel’s history, and it’s easy to understand why he makes the decisions that he does. Mike is also an excellent and well-drawn character since he writes travel books about haunted places and, therefore, doesn’t appear to be as scared by the prospect of spirits as others are.1408is also worth checking out sincethere are actually three different endingsand it’s interesting to compare them.
While it might not be the King adaptation that people talk about the most,1408did really well at the box office. According toFilm School Rejects,1408grossed $20.6 million during its opening weekend, and as Box Office Mojo reported, grossed $132,963,417 worldwide.
