Netflix’sSquid Gameis a hit South Korean psychological and survival drama series. It was a massive success when it debuted on the streaming giant in 2021. Thus, it was given that a second season would be greenlit. It took three years forSquid GameSeason 2to stream, and it finally landed onNetflixin December 2024. The second season was as great as the first one. Thankfully, fans do not have to wait that long, as Season 3 will be released in just a few weeks. However, some are sad because it’s also the final season.Squid Gamecreator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke about the franchise’s future in a recent interview.
Lee Byung-hun, who plays the Front Man inSquid Game, and Hwang spoke about the show at a press conference in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Hwang confirmed thatSquid GameSeason 3is the final run of the series, and fans couldn’t expect more from the current show. “I have no plans to make Season 4. This was something fully discussed and agreed upon with Netflix while working on Season 3,” he said (via The Korea Herald). Hwang acknowledged that they could stretch the story, but it wasn’t necessary. So, they decided to end Gi-hun’s story after three seasons. However, the filmmaker teased that he could return to the franchise with spinoffs. He explained:
That doesn’t mean I’ll never return to Squid Game in the future…. I’m not planning to make anything related to Squid Game right away, though I am considering the possibility of doing a spinoff.
Squid GameCould Carry On Via Spinoffs After Season Three Is Over
Hwang’s statement hints that there could be more in the franchise. He previously said thatSquid GameisGi-hun’s storyand will end in three seasons. However, he could return to theSquid Gameworld and focus on another character and story arc or create a spinoff instead. Yes, there are still more elements to explore, such as the VIPs, the workers in masks, how they were chosen, what they do during downtime, how the fatal game began, and how they created the deadly children’s games. Hwang’s words confirm the rumors thatSquid Gamecould continue after Season 3in another form. A previous report claimed that a newSquid Gameseries is in development with director David Fincher and British writer Dennis Kelly. However, this could probably be a separate project from Hwang’s when the latter returns to continue the world he created.
Hwang’s teasing about a potentialSquid Gamespinoff is delightful news to fans who want to see more of that brutal and dystopian world. However, based on his statement, it could take years for his nextSquid Gameshow because he isn’t in a rush for a follow-up project. For sure, fans will understand.Squid Gameis such a huge world and can be physically and emotionally exhausting for those involved, especially Hwang, who led the production. Hwang previously said that he lost eight to nine teeth in Season 1 andtwo more when they filmed Seasons 2 and 3simultaneously. Hwang deserves the break, and hopefully, he will return with the same ardor to deliver a much more intense story within theSquid Gameworld.
