Summary
Following its official launch,Splitgate 2has seen its player base triple since the open beta period. WhileSplitgate 2has faced its share of controversy over the last month, it appears that many players are continuing to play the free-to-play shooter from 1047 Games.
On June 6,Splitgate 2was officially released, marking the end of the open beta period for the game. To celebrate the occasion, 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx appeared at Summer Game Fest. However, his time on stage was met with controversy due to his “Make FPS Great Again” hat, with some fans unhappy with the choice. Following the incident, Proulx released apost on social mediaapologizing for the decision, saying he did not intend for his actions to negatively impact the game’s community.

Despite this controversy and others surroundingmicrotransactions inSplitgate 2, the game appears to be gaining new players. In a follow-up tweet to Proulx’s apology, the developer revealed that the game has seen impressive growth since the open beta. According to the 1047 Games, the player base has “more than tripled” in size. In addition, the tweet noted that a significant reason for this growth is due to success on consoles. The game is currently available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
Splitgate 2’s Player Base Has “More Than Tripled”
While the developer’s response did not share an exact player total, Steam gives an idea of how the game has been doing on PC. According toSteamDB data, the game peaked at 25,785 players shortly after its full release. The player count has fluctuated since then, with the concurrent players at 14,665 at the time of writing. However, the influx of players on console means the player base is likely much higher based on 1047 Games' tweet.
It will be interesting to see ifSplitgate 2can stay popular in the months following its full release. The new game looks to build on the gameplay of the originalSplitgateby adding new content and evolving existing mechanics. WhileSplitgate 2still features portals, many of its systems have beenreworked on Unreal Engine 5. For example, the new shooter features factions, each with unique abilities to synergize with teammates. In addition, 1047 Games added new maps, weapons, and modes to the sequel, even bringing a battle royale experience for the game’s full release.

Acontent roadmap forSplitgate 2was previously shown, revealing many more updates are expected in the future. These are expected to bring new content, like more maps and power weapons. However, it remains to be seen if this will be enough to outweigh the problems some gamers have with the title.
