Fans are thrilled thatSpaceballs 2is on the way withmany original cast members, includingRick Moranis as Dark Helmet, director Mel Brooks as Yogurt, and Bill Pullman as Lone Starr. The recent news thatBill’s son Lewis Pullman could play his character’s sonis just as exciting.Spaceballswas released in 1987 and wasa parody of various beloved movies such asPlanet of the Apes, Star Wars, andThe Wizard of Oz.The talented cast included Daphne Zuniga, who is returning for the sequel, along with the late actors Dick Van Patten, Joan Rivers, and John Candy.
SinceSpaceballsis best known for poking fun attheStar Warsfranchise, fans definitely expect that to continue in the upcoming sequel. While of course any sequel is steeped in nostalgia,Spaceballs 2needs to include one of the greatest jokes from the original film. This would make audiences want to see the new movie even more.
Spaceballs 2’s Title Should Reflect One Of The Most Memorable (And Timely) Jokes
Spaceball’s characters once joked about a sequel title, and the realSpaceballs 2needs to use it.When Lone Starr asks, “I wonder, will we ever see each other again?” Yogurt says:
“Who knows? God willing, we’ll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.”
This needs to be the sequel’s title for two reasons:to pay off a 30-year-old joke and to reflect the Hollywood trend of studios hoping to make money from nostalgic sequels.
Whilenostalgia is a big thing in the horror genre, fromtheScary Moviereboot with its goofy toneto theI Know What You Did Last Summerlegacy sequelcoming in summer 2025, movie studios always want to profit from a franchise that has an existing, built-in fanbase. It makes sense from a business perspective to makeSpaceballs 2, and, of course, there are plenty of fans who have been ready and waiting.Spaceballsis known for its quirky takedown ofStar Wars, andit would make sense forSpaceballs 2to joke about sequels. This could be an interesting framework for the story as all of the main characters could have a different opinion on whether it’s a good idea to keep going with a franchise or if the original film should always be left alone.
It also seems logical to call the movieSpaceballs 2: The Search for More Moneysinceit’s been 38 years since the original movie was released. While of course there are many fans who know the movie inside and out, and there’s no doubt that many will rewatch it before the sequel comes out, using this joke again would be a nice way to remind audiences of story’s tone.
Several fans are hopeful that this old joke will be included in the upcoming movie. In aReddit threadfrom a year ago when the sequel was announced, Redditor @REQ52767 wrote:
“If it isn’t officially titled, “Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money”, then this was all for nothing.”
In another thread,Redditor @sugarfoot_mgheewrote:
“It better be called “The search for more money” or I am going to be disappointed.”
Mel Brooks Once Said He Wasn’t Sure About Making A Spaceballs 2
While fans are no doubt glad that they will get to seeanotherStar Warsparody movie, it wasn’t always a sure bet. In 2013, Mel Brooks gave a fascinating interview toEntertainment WeeklyaboutSpaceballs, and heanswered a question about continuing the story. He said:
“Fox tried to bribe me to doSpaceballs 2, but I always said no. I don’t want in any way to compete with the movie or hurt it. And as a musical, I don’t think I could do better [than the movie].”
Although there is no official release date yet,Spaceballs 2will be released in theaters in 2027, so fans have a long time to wonder about the exact title.
