Why did Amazon cancel the series after its strongest season?
It truly came as a shock when Amazon announced that it wouldn’t be moving ahead with the series and was cancelling it without giving it a satisfying conclusion.Deadline reportedthat Amazondecided to cancel the show due to financial reasons. Although it’s not unlikely for production houses or streaming platforms to cancel the show suddenly, it was really appalling that the production giant decided to cancel the show after its strongest edition. The critics praised Season 3 ofThe Wheel of Timefor its epic storytelling, performances, visuals, and emotional value. Currently, it holds a critical rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated season in the entire franchise. Also, the way Season 3 ended paved the way for the makers to explore the series in a more nuanced manner.
For example, fans would have loved to see howSiuan Sanche’s death might have impacted Moiraine. In the books, Siuan died during the final battle. However, inThe Wheel of Timeseries, Siuan was subjected to a sham trial and killed by her fellow Aes Sedai. After her death, Elaida takes the throne and begins her ruling. Meanwhile, Rand al’Thor made everyone believe that he was the Car’a’carn and that the Aiel should follow him to defeat the Dark One. Moreover, Egwene still believes that Rand is not in control of his powers. These are some of the plotlines that fans never got to see in detail.
In anexclusive interview with Game Rant, showrunner Rafe Judkins noted how he wanted to explore the relationship between Rand and Egwene in future seasons. As per Judkins, Egwene is the only one who “doesn’t bow to him” (Rand), and their relationship “has really moved from a place of unity to a place of potential conflict,” which made this particular plotline really intriguing. With the cancellation of the series, fans don’t know if they’ll ever see the story move ahead, and this is not the only question that needs to be answered.
All three seasons ofThe Wheel of Timeare available for streaming on Prime Video.
