Summary
The rumored upcomingGod of Wargame will reportedly feature Deimos, Kratos’s brother, as the main playable character. This would mark a significant change for theGod of Warfranchise, which has featured Kratos as the protagonist in all the entries released so far.
For a very long time,God of Warhas been synonymous with the PlayStation brand, thanks to several successful games in the series being exclusive to Sony’s platform. Since being re-imagined with the 2018 namesake release and its sequel, the IP has become notably more popular overall and attracted new audiences on the PC as well. As a result, fans have been very curious to know about Santa Monica Studio’s plans for the franchise’s future, even more so after rumors of a switch to Egyptian mythology started intensifying. Most recently, a new report claimed that thenextGod of Warcould be a 2.5D Metroidvania title, unlike the previous two games.
As spotted byInsider Gaming, Twitter user MysticMsa3d shared a conversation with leaker Shpeshal_Nick where it was revealed that a newGod of Wargame in which the player takes control of Deimos was currently in development. It was suggested that this Greek mythology-inspired title could be announced in 2025, with the upcomingPlayStation State of Play on June 4increasingly looking like a suitable occasion. Similar to Tom Henderson and Jeff Grubb, the leaker also confirmed that the game in question fell in the Metroidvania genre. Moreover, the report also highlighted aResetEra threadthat supported the claims of a Greece setting and Deimos being the central character. Additionally, certain comments also stated that the project was “heavily inspired” by the 2019 Metroidvania game,Blasphemous, and that Mega Cat Studios, the developer behindFive Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit,was “involved,” with Santa Monica Studio looking over things.
New God of War to Feature Deimos in a 2.5D Metroidvania Game
If the reports ofGod of Wardipping its toes in the metroidvania genre are true, it wouldn’t be the first time a popular franchise has tried its hand at this category. Last year, Ubisoft’sPrince of Persiaalso tried something similar with the release ofThe Lost Crownand received widespread critical acclaim. What might be a bigger challenge for the rumoredGod of Wargame is getting strong scores while also selling well, something thatPrince of Persia: The Lost Crownwas unable to do.
With 2025 being the 20th anniversary year of theGod of Warfranchise, it might appear to be the perfect window to announce a new game in the series. In case a move in that regard happens, it could even address thedissatisfaction a section ofGod of Warfans feltaround the time of the official anniversary festivities back in March.
