Summary

There might be a newGod of Wargame in the works after all, but rumors suggest it’s something fans might not have expected from the long-running action franchise. There has been much speculation about the future ofGod of WarsinceGod of War Ragnarok’sValhallaDLC launched back in late 2023, with conflicting rumors about Santa Monica Studio’s plans for the next game. 2022’sGod of War Ragnarokclosed the book on Kratos and Atreus’s Norse saga while leaving things open for either character to return in a starring role later on.

Some of the rumors have hinted that there will be anewGod of Wargame released later this year, and that it will go back to the time of Kratos’ original rampage through ancient Greece for a standalone prequel story. Insiders have claimed that this new entry would be smaller in scope than the two NorseGod of Wargames, similar toSpider-Man: Miles MoralesorThe Last of Us: Left Behind.

Jeff Grubb, the gaming journalist who shared the previous rumors of a newGod of Wargame for 2025, recently spoke with Insider Games’ Tom Henderson on Twitter about thepotential future ofGod of War. According to them, this next entry won’t be the usual 3D action game, but rather a 2.5D Metroidvania-style title similar toPrince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Next God of War Could Be 2.5D Metroidvania Title

No further details about this supposedGod of Wartitle were shared at this time, and it isn’t known if it is being developed at Santa Monica Studio or by a third-party developer. There is a chance that it could be officially revealed during theupcoming PlayStation State of Play livestreamon June 4, which will feature over 40 minutes of footage and updates from future PlayStation games. If not, then maybe Sony will present it at Summer Game Fest 2025 a few days later on June 6.

This is assuming that the 2.5D Metroidvania title Jeff Grubb and Tom Henderson mentioned is in fact being developed. 2025 marks the20th anniversary of theGod of Warfranchise, meaning that the timing couldn’t be better for a new game starring Kratos. A 2.5D Metroidvania game would be something fresh for the series, and could be a fun way to hold fans over for the eventual next full-on 3D follow-up down the road. Meanwhile, there have also been rumors of remasters of the olderGod of Wartitles, but nothing has yet been confirmed.
