Summary

ManyResident Evilfans have been clamoring for anRE2-style ground-up remake of the original game that started it all, but according to a trusted insider, it may be a while before that becomes a possibility. Since the release of theResident Evil 2remake in 2019, the franchise has essentially been split in two, with publisher and developer Capcom having released a string of remakes alongside the continuation of the mainline first-person series. While games on both sides of this newResident Evilfence have been successful, it’s the remakes,Resident Evil 2andRE4specifically, that have garnered critical acclaim.

The future ofResident Evilhas been shrouded in rumors recently. The long-rumoredRebecca Chambers-ledResident Evil Revelationssuccessor, thought to be calledResident Evil Outrageand exclusive to Nintendo Switch, was reportedly canceled back in 2022. Much larger rumors swirl aroundResident Evil 9, the next big mainline entry initially thought to be open-world. Perhaps some of the longest-running rumors have to do withResident Evil Code: VeronicaandResident Evil 0being the next two remakes. Shortly after the release of theRE4remake two years ago, speculation started about a remake ofResident Evil 5, but those rumors were quickly squashed in favor ofCode: VeronicaandRE0.

A well-known and trustedResident Evilinsider has disappointing news for fans who’ve been wishing for aResident Evil 1remake. On Twitter, Dusk Golem expressed that a remake of the originalResident Evilgame isn’t currently in the works at Capcom. Furthermore, Golem went on to say that it’s still a possibility down the road, but only after therumoredCode: VeronicaandResident Evil 0remakescome out first.

RE1 Remake May Not Come Until After Rumored Code: Veronica and RE0 Remakes

While potentially having to wait two full remake cycles beforeResidentEvil 1’s remakeseems like a long road, it’s worth noting how much quicker Capcom has been releasing its remakes compared to the mainline installments. TheResident Evil 3remake came out just one year afterResident Evil 2, though many believe it’s because the much smaller and shorterRE3was originally intended to be DLC forRE2. Still, there’s a chance that the development cycles of theCode: VeronicaandRE0remakes could end up being shorter, but with just how extensive and detailed theseResident Evilremakes have been, this isn’t likely to be the case.Resident Evil 1still remains one of the most fan-requested remakes of the franchise, so Capcom may more than likely get around to it at some point in the future; it seems like simply a matter of when.

With over two years having already passed sinceResident Evil 4, Capcom seems primed to announce the nextREgame soon, whether a remake or themuch-anticipatedResident Evil 9. Some even believe Capcom could be making an appearance next month at either Summer Game Fest, Xbox’s showcase or the rumored PlayStation event, soResident Evilfans should stay tuned in the coming weeks.
