Summary
APokemon Scarlet and Violetfan artist re-imagined the Paldea region’s three starters, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, in the 1996 art style of the originalPokemon Red and Greengames and shared their handiwork on social media. ThePokemon Scarlet and Violetfan artist was complimented for their handiwork and for giving other trainers a trip down memory lane.
In eachPokemonmainline game, trainers choose between one of three Pokemon they can pick as their starter. Each starter Pokemon corresponds to the Grass, Fire, or Water types, with some gaining secondary types upon evolution. This tradition started with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle in the firstPokemongames and has continued ever since. InPokemon Scarlet and Violet, young trainers in the Paldea region can choose between the grass cat Sprigatito, the fiery reptile Fuecoco, and the duck-like Quaxly. Over time, these Pokemon evolve into the thieving Meowscarada, the jovial Skeledirge, andthe acrobatic Quaquaval.
WhilePokemonfans have crafted homages to Sprigatitoand other starters before, one fan’s handiwork hearkened back to the series' origins. On the r/Pokemon subreddit, aPokemon Scarlet and Violetfan named Octoberoclock shared a drawing depicting Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly in the art style used forPokemon Red and Greenin 1996. This style was utilized by thePokemonfranchise’s longtime art lead, Ken Sugimori, during his time as the series' main character and monster designer. Using washed-out tones based on Sugimori’s older work, Octoberoclock showed how they thought Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly would look if they were drawn three decades prior. Additionally, Octoberoclock made a few changes to the Paldean starter trio to make them stand out from official depictions.
Pokemon Fan Artist Draws Paldea Starters in Gen 1 Style
Sprigatito was shown on all fours with its left paw raised, and the inside of its ears was colored red. Fuecoco was drawn standing up with its head turned to the left side of the drawing, and it was given blue eyes and a large yellow pattern on its belly. Finally, Quaxly’s eyes changed from blue to black, and its feet changed from blue to yellow to match its beak. Despite coming out almost three decades ago,Pokemon’s first generation remains popularwith fans in 2025, as players take on various challenges to add a new layer of difficulty.
Pokemonfans complimented Octoberoclock for their throwback to Sugimori’s watercolor style with their latest handiwork. WithPokemon Legends: Z-Abringing the startersChikorita, Totodile, and Tepig into the spotlight, it remains to be seen what fans will create next.
