My name is Joshua Duckworth, and I like Bug-types. I don’t really know how or when that became a thing. It certainly wasn’t back inPokemon Yellow, but now I will always have one bug-type Pokemon on my team regardless of the game. If they have no supporters in the entire world, it’s because I am dead. Yanmega is easily my favorite Bug-type andoverall Gen 4 Pokemon, but Escavalier is up there as well despite the huge Fire weakness. And I sincerely hopePokemon Gen 10finally gives the little guys the justice they have been denied for so long, and it could easily knock out two issues plaguing Bugs: typing and status.

Pokemon Gen 10is still some time off, sure, but I don’t have much confidence inPokemon Legends: Z-Adoing it. It doesn’t seem like it’s adding any newPokemon, and of thenew Mega Evolutions rumored forPokemon Legends Z-A, there’s only one Bug-type among them: Mega Scolipede. That doesn’t inspire confidence, but I’ve been patient for this long. I can wait a little longer, but if it doesn’t happen in Gen 10, I’m not quite sure developer Game Freak is ever going to pull the trigger.

Yanmega In The Pokemon Anime

Justice for the Bug Type

There are two areas where Bug-type Pokemon have never been represented: there is no Bug-type Legendary and there areno Bug/Dragon-type Pokemon. Regarding the latter, there have been plenty of types that weren’t represented in games that Game Freak would bring into the next generation.Pokemon Scarlet and Violetintroduced several new type combinations: Bug/Dark, Electric/Fighting, Poison/Normal, Grass/Fire, Steel/Poison, Fighting/Ground, and Fairy/Fighting. AssumingPokemonGen 10 does the same with the dwindling list, Bug/Dragon could easily be among them. Yes, it is an absolute injustice that Yanmega is not a Bug/Dragon Pokemon, but I doubt Yanmega’s typing is going to change.

Every Pokemon type has a legendary associated with it except the Bug-type. Yes, Genesect exists, butGenesect is a mythical Pokemon. Buzzswole and Pheromosa also exist, but they are Ultra Beasts. A traditional legendary Bug-type Pokemon doesn’t exist. And while a Bug-type legendary and perhaps a Bug/Dragon-type Pseudolegendary could work wonders, the simplest solution is just to make a Bug/Dragon-type Legendary in Gen 10. Boom, done.

Bug-type Pokemon are typically perceived as low-level and weak Pokemon who historically evolve faster than others, but never to the same heights. It makes themgreat early route Pokemon to catch, but Genesect, Buzzswole, and Pheromosa are all proof that powerful, awesome Bug Pokemon can totally exist and work. It doesn’t even have to be a Box Legendary; a legendary trio revolving around Bugs could easily work, with there being a Bug/Dragon among them. I just want one, Game Freak, c’mon, so even if it’s just a one-off legendary, that’s fine too.

We can only wait and see whenPokemonGen 10 news starts rolling out, which will probably be wellafterPokemon Legends: Z-Acomes out. Just know I’ll be heartbroken if it doesn’t happen, and I’ll be bugging all my friends about it too.
