Twisted Pixel, the creator of’Splosion ManandLocoCycle, revealed during Summer Game Fest 2025 that it’s working onMarvel’s Deadpool VR, an all-new VR-exclusive action game starring the beloved self-referential superhero, Deadpool.Marvel’s Deadpool VRis going to feature a blend of parkour and fast-paced, gory combat; players will have the freedom to stab, shoot, and blow enemies up in a variety of different ways. Unlike theDeadpoolfilms, the game’s main character will be portrayed byHow I Met Your Motherstar Neil Patrick Harris instead of Ryan Reynolds.Marvel’s Deadpool VRis being published by Oculus Studios, and it’s going to be released exclusively on Meta Quest 3 later this year.

The fact that Deadpool is finally getting a new video game of his own is kind of a big deal. The last standalone game that featured the quippy superhero was 2013’sDeadpool, which was met with mostly mixed reviews and was eventually delisted on modern platforms. Although some fans are likely disappointed thatDeadpool is receiving a VR gameinstead of a traditional, flat-screen title, it’s nice that the character is getting a new AAA game at all in the first place. That said,Deadpool VR’s Meta Quest 3 exclusivity will likely be a major barrier to entry for VR enthusiasts, and it’s put a big dent in PlayStation’s Marvel dominance.

Deadpool VR is One of the First Marvel Games in Years That’s Skipping PlayStation

Sony Has Dominated the Marvel Video Game Space in Recent Years

In the last several years, Sony has positioned its PlayStation platform as the go-to place for Marvel video games. Aside from theNintendo Switch-exclusiveMarvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, all Marvel console games from 2018 and beyond have been released on a PlayStation system. Some of the most successful Marvel games of the last decade, in fact, have been launched exclusively on PlayStation consoles. Insomniac Games' recent superhero titles, likeMarvel’s Spider-Man,Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, andMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, have all come out on PlayStation 4/5 first before any other platform.

Not content with just Spider-Man, Sony has also secured exclusivity rights for several other recent and upcoming Marvel games. These includeMarvel’s Iron Man VR(which came out in 2020 and is set in the same world as Insomniac’sSpider-Mangames),Marvel’s Wolverine, andMarvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. Judging by Sony’s near-flawless track record with its Marvel video games so far, these titles will likely be massive critical and commercial hits, and they’ll probably sell a lot of PlayStation systems.

Deadpool VR Would’ve Been a Perfect Fit for the Struggling PSVR2

Even though PlayStation players already have access to a lot of Marvel games, it’s a bit unfortunate that they’re going to miss out onMarvel’s Deadpool VR. The PSVR2, Sony’s latest VR headset, would benefit greatly from having a title like this in its catalog, especially sincethe PSVR2 is sorely lacking in AAA games. Unlike the original PSVR, Sony has barely supported the PSVR2 with first-party content, and it hasn’t been able to secure tons of third-party blockbuster titles. Although the PSVR2 does have some exclusive games, they’re not exactly system-sellers, like the ones available on Meta Quest 3 or PC VR.

IfMarvel’s Deadpool VRwas available on the PSVR2, it would likely have moved the needle for Sony’s struggling VR headset, especially if it’s as high-quality asthe recently-releasedBatman: Arkham Shadow. Sadly, since the game is being published and developed by a subsidiary of Meta, it’s probably never going to make the jump to other VR systems. Meta has been very adamant about retaining exclusivity for its first-party titles, and it’s even gone so far as to delist games from its newly-acquired studios on non-Meta storefronts. Maybe Sony could get Insomniac to develop a new superhero VR game for PSVR2 to counter the lack ofMarvel’s Deadpool VRon its platform, but the chances of that happening are pretty slim.
