Developed by Ready at Dawn and released in 2015 as a PS4 exclusive,The Order: 1886was an action-adventure game set in an alternate history steampunk version of London. In the title, gamers progressed via mostly linear paths and used cover-based shooting mechanics. Despite praise for its production values,TheOrder:1886struggled to achieve critical acclaim, as most critics complained that the title was too short and lacked gameplay freedom.
In a recent interview withVGC,The Order: 1886’s creative director, Ru Weerasuriya, discussed the plans that Ready at Dawn had for a trilogy. According to the developer, the sequel was already in the early stages of development, and it had a 10-page pitch, which included new elements such as bigger fights, as well as multiplayer. Originally, multiplayer was planned for the first title, but it didn’t make it into the final version. The mixed reception recieved byThe Order: 1886eventually doomed the project, and the sequel was shelved. The third game did not even make it into early production, despite the team having some ideas about its story.
The Order: 1886’s Sequel Would Have Multiplayer and Bigger Combat Sequences
This was not the first time that developers from Ready at Dawn had talked about a possible sequel. Because of this, the developers moved on to different projects.

The hope of another game set inThe Order: 1886’s universe mostly died downwhen Ready at Dawn shut downlast year, after two decades. Back in 2020, the studio was acquired by Oculus Studios, owned by Meta. Four years after that, the studio was closed by Meta during the growing wave of layoffs that happened in the game industry in 2024 and continued into 2025.
