If you consider yourself a Trekkie or a Trekker, then today is a good day for you. With the third season set to start streaming soon, Paramount+ has decided they want more ofStar Trek: Strange New Worldsin the future.

Although theStar Trekfranchise has usually found its home on theatrical screens and traditional television networks, the past decade has signaled a significant shift for the series. After all, aStar Trekfilm hasn’t been released in theaters since 2016’sStar Trek Beyond, and aStar Trekshow hasn’t been seen on broadcast television sinceEnterprisewent off the air in 2005. Beginning in 2017, all newStar Trekcontent has only appeared on Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access), except for the second season ofStar Trek: Prodigy, which ended up going to Netflix. Considering Paramount+ has already aired six differentStar Trekshows over the past eight years and has a seventh—Starfleet Academy—on the way, it feels safe to consider the franchise a major tentpole of the streaming service’s strategy. The latest news regarding the franchise’s most critically acclaimed recent series,Strange New Worlds, verifies that theory quite handily.

Even thoughStar Trek: Strange New Worldsisn’t set to return for its third season until July 17th, Paramount+ has gone ahead and renewed the show for a fifth and final season(viaThe Hollywood Reporter). They had already renewed the show for a fourth season back in April 2024, so finishing the show out with a fifth season this early in the game proves that the streamer is confident inStrange New Worlds' creative team to keep bringing the goods. It isn’t all peaches and cream for franchise die-hards, though, asthe fifth season will only house six episodes as opposed to the ten-episode count each other season of the show has had.Regardless,SNWshowrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers apparently hada five-season plan for the series from the very beginning, so at least that will come to fruition for the pair of creatives.

Star Trek: Strange New WorldsIs Getting A Fifth And Final Season, Even Though Season Three Isn’t Out Yet

AsStrange New Worldsis technically set just before the events ofthe originalStar Trekseriesand features numerous beloved characters like James T. Kirk and Spock as a result, fans have assumed that the series would end with a lead-up right into Kirk taking over the USS Enterprise. Given that Goldsman and Myers are seemingly getting their wish of five seasons, perhaps this will actually come to pass. Granted, that is years down the line, as filming on the fourth season isn’t scheduled to be finished until August.

It is safe to assume much of thebelovedStrange New Worldscastwill return for the final season, with Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike leading the way. Both Christina Chong (Black Mirror,Doctor Who, Halo: Nightfall) and Rebecca Romijn (X-Men,The Librarians) are science fiction royalty who would be missed. Ethan Peck and Celia Rose Gooding play originalStar Trekseries characters (Spock and Uhura, respectively) that’ll stick absoutely around. What would the show even be without Jess Bush’s Christine Chapel, Babs Olusanmokun’s Joseph M’Benga, and Melissa Navia’s Erica Ortegas? Throw in some other legacy characters like Paul Wesley’s Kirk and Martin Quinn’s Montgomery Scott, andStar Trek: Strange New Worldshasthe makings of a fan’s continuing dream.
