One Piece chapter 1140 gave fans a good look at the skirmish between Luffy and Scopper Gaban. This was not so much a battle but a test from Gaban for Luffy. The former left wing of the Straw Hat Pirates wanted to see for himself what Luffy was made of, whether he truly did beat Kaido, and if he really was Nika, as the rumors said. Luffy was, much to the surprise of the fans, completely overwhelmed by Scopper Gaban in the battle, failing to even touch the old man. What’s more, a single Haki-less attack by Scopper Gaban was enough to push both Luffy and Zoro to their most alert state and maximum power, with Luffy going as far as to say that Gaba could’ve killed him.

That fact that he managed that while joking around with the two just goes to show that even in his old age, this man is monstrously powerful.
