Ever since the release ofLEGO Star Wars: The Video Gameback in 2005, Traveller’s Tales' LEGO games have been everywhere. The studio has taken the concept to all sorts of different franchises and even delivered its ownmultiversal crossover experience withLEGO Dimensions. And while all of those licensed games have been the primary focus, the studio also explored more original tales with 2013’sLEGO City Undercover. However, it has done little with the concept since, but the Nintendo Switch 2 could change that.
LEGO City Undercoverwas unlike anything Traveller’s Tales has really done, as it was fully disconnected from LEGO’s countless licensed themes. Instead, it brought players to a world built around LEGO’s City theme and told a brand-new, wholly original tale following police officer Chase McCain. It may not have been the biggest LEGO title around, but what it delivered was something truly special and unique. Because of that, many players have been calling for a sequel for years, and the Switch 2 may be the perfect place to deliver just that.
LEGO City Undercover Could Thrive on the Switch 2
LEGO City Was Born on Nintendo Consoles
The biggest reason why the Switch 2’s release should marka return toLEGO City Undercoveris that the title exists because of Nintendo. The original game was not only a Wii U exclusive a year after the console hit store shelves, but it was also published by Nintendo, which makes it very different from other major Traveller’s Tales titles. The studio would also release a prequel spin-off for the Nintendo 3DS titledLEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins,and both titles would take full advantage of each system’s unique features.
It would take until 2017 forLEGO City Undercoverto hit other consoles, with a remaster releasing for every major device at the time, including the Nintendo Switch. Since then, there has been no news on a follow-up, with the Wii U version and its prequel even being removed from the Nintendo eShop. But, while it currently does not seem like Traveller’s Tales has any plans torevisit theLEGO Cityconcept, someone really should with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Switch 2 Could Take the Concept to Whole New Heights
The Nintendo Switch 2 could take theLEGO City Undercoverconcept to new heights, as it is promising to do the same thing with many of Nintendo’s mainline franchises. There is just so much that the studio could still do with it if given the chance. The open world could be expanded considerably, other original LEGO themes could be incorporated, and there are so many other stories that could be told followingChase McCain. The remaster shows that the studio is at least interested in not abandoning it completely, so now it just needs to go all in.
If a sequel toLEGO City Undercoverdoes not get released, then the game should at least make its way over tothe Switch 2. The console will be able to play the 2017 remaster, but the studio could re-release it bundled with its prequel, as that is only playable on the 3DS. Additionally, the studio could further build out this world and take advantage of the Switch 2’s stronger hardware, much like what some Nintendo games are doing.
As of now, the future of LEGO games is pretty uncertain as a whole. Traveller’s Tales has lost the exclusive license to the toy brand and has not revealed its next title yet, numerous other studios have started creating their own LEGO games, and LEGO itself is forming a new internal studio. So, while it remains to be seen just what that means for players, hopefully, one of these studios has plans to takeLEGO City Undercoverfor a spin again. Even if it comes as a smaller-scale adventure, the concept alone deserves to live on in some fashion.
