This article contains post-Act 1 spoilers forClair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33gives players a lot of freedom when it comes to building their ideal Expedition team. Whileevery party member inExpedition 33has their own archetype, the Pictos and Lumina system allows players to tailor these characters' abilities to best suit their playstyle. However, there are some character builds that only the boldest players can make work, but those willing to take a chance may find a lot of success in one particular build for Verso.
After joining the party in Act 2 ofClair Obscur: Expedition 33, it becomes clear that Verso is a character with a high potential ceiling. His main combat gimmick of increasing his Perfection rank with each attack made without taking damage can quickly amp up his damage output as each rank increases his total damage dealt. For players who want to maximize Verso’s DPS capabilities, they may need to take some risks and utilize Verso’s full glass cannon potential.
Skills
To makeVerso one of the most powerful characters inExpedition 33, players will have to sacrifice all but one of his HP. While this is certainly a dangerous move, the purpose of this build is to defeat all enemies before they even have a chance of hitting Verso. To start, players will want to make sure they obtain Verso’s Blodam weapon from the Chromatic Reaper Cultist boss, since this weapon increases Verso’s Perfection rank based on his missing health, meaning he will automatically reach S Rank at 1 HP.
Verso’s skill tree seems to encourage this type of high-risk, high-reward gameplay since his Overload skill reduces his HP to 1 while boosting his Perfection rank to S. If using Overload on turn one, having the Base Shield Pictos can help allow Verso to take a hit while protected by a shield in the event that the player misses a dodge or parry. The rest of his equippedPictos and Luminashould support his low HP with increased damage output, such as At Death’s Door, Confident Fighter, and Glass Cannon, on top of Pictos like First Strike to ensure the player moves first, as well as Pictos that add AP like Energizing Start and Energizing Turn to ensure that Verso has enough to use his best skills right off the bat.
Players can avoid wasting turn one using Overload by ensuring Verso’s HP is at 1 entering a battle, such as letting him faint in the previous battle without reviving him.
Verso Can Be Surprisingly Powerful at 1 HP
The goal of this build is to boost Verso’s attack so high that he can take out all enemies in one hit without the risk of taking any damage himself, since having 1 HP means any hit will do him in. The best skill to use with this build is Phantom Stars since it deals extreme Light damage to all enemies, and only costs 5 AP at S Rank Perfection. With theBlodam weapon, having Verso at 1 HP should also let him start the fight at S Rank, and the Energizing Start Pictos should give him enough AP to immediately use Phantom Stars.
Aside from the danger of leaving Verso with 1 HP, what makes this build not necessarily suited for everyExpedition 33player is the time it takes to obtain all the pieces for it. Given that many of these Pictos are locked behind optional late-game parts of the Continent, players may not be able to run with this Verso build for the majority of the game. However, tracking down all the components can make theClair Obscurendgamea breeze with Verso as the Expedition’s powerhouse.
