The problems were reported around 3:30 PM Eastern by Twitter user OatmealDome, who stated that a major outage at Google Cloud is affecting Nintendo online services. The affected network is hosted on Google Cloud technologies, somultiplayer functions for games likeSplatoon 3andMario Kart Worldwill remain unplayable until Google Cloud’s problems are resolved. Over 14,000 user reports on Down Detector corroborated the news, as many reported their inability to connect to the server infrastructure. The outage also affected Nintendo mobile titles likePokemon GO, as nearly4,000 users reported the same outage on Down Detector. Users trying to connect to any affected Nintendo service are met with disconnection errors.
OatmealDome stated that the Nintendo eShop and specific online games likeTetris 99are currently unaffected by the outage.Google released a statementabout the ongoing incident at 3:41 PM Eastern. The company said that its engineers have identified the root cause of the outage and are applying various measures to mitigate the problem. However, customers will still experience varying degrees of outages on Google Cloud until the problems are fully resolved. Google did not provide an ETA for a full recovery as of this writing.
