The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.

Itachi Uchiha is one of the most beloved characters in theNarutouniverse, and some fans wonder if he could ever return inBoruto: Two Blue Vortex.Borutostarted off with a mixed reception, with a good portion of fans seeing it as “milking” the franchise too much and not worthy of being a sequel to the original story.

However, as the story progressed,Borutoadded many interesting elements to the franchise. Currently,Boruto: Two Blue Vortexis in the Shinju Clones arc, showing a decisive battle between Jura and Boruto Uzumaki. The story is setting up a future arc against a powerful Otsutsuki villain, but there are some plot threads that could muddle the story. With that in mind, it is clear that there is room for Itachi to return, but should he?

Itachi Uchiha is one of themost remarkable characters inNaruto. Fans were curious about him from the beginning, since Itachi is essentially the reason Sasuke strived to become a powerful shinobi.. Thus, most readers were amazed as they discovered more about the perpetrator of the Uchiha massacre. The fact that Itachi did everything he did trying to protect Sasuke just makes his character even better, and his death isone of the most tragic inNaruto.

While there are stronger antagonists, probably no villain inNarutoresonates with the audience in the way Itachi does. Even with two spin-off novels focused on him,Narutofans still want Kishimoto to drop more content about this character.

What Happened to Itachi in the Original Series?

Itachi was a promising shinobi when he was a child. His father, Fugaku Uchiha, saw a lot of potential in him and trained him from an early age. However, the Uchiha were under suspicion in Konoha, and Itachi was dragged into the confusion. He was manipulated into believing he had to kill his entire clan in order to protect Sasuke, and so he did.

People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true… that is how they define reality. But what does it mean to be correct or true? Merely vague concepts… their reality may all be an illusion.

— Itachi Uchiha

After the Uchiha massacre, Itachi became an international fugitive. He later joined Akatsuki, an international criminal shinobi organization, making things look even worse for him. Sasuke’s arc is mostly focused on his hatred for Itachi, but at the end, Sasuke also understands that Itachi was a victim, at least to some extent. Unlike most characters, Itachi didn’t die on the battlefield. Although he did have some great battles, especially the last one with Sasuke,Itachi died from a terminal illness.

Should Boruto TBV Bring Itachi Back?

Given what has already been introduced inBoruto: Two Blue Vortex, there seem to be ways for Itachi to make a comeback. One of the most obvious ones would be through cloning technology, even though explaining how Itachi’s body or genetic material could suddenly appear in the series would be challenging. Sasuke transplanted Itachi’s eye into himself inNaruto, so this could serve as a possible explanation, but many fans would probably see it as a “lame excuse.” Other possibilities include Omnipotence and potentially overpowered shinjutsu that have yet to be introduced in the series.

There are also ways to bring Itachi back into the story without reviving him. Those would be flashbacks, dreams, or documents/things found by another character. For example,Sarada Uchiha could find somethingrelated to Itachi, perhaps something written by him, that could help her somehow. In this way, Itachi’s “spirit” could briefly appear in the series, which would surely please many fans. In fact, this kind ofsmall homage would make much more sense than bringing Itachi backinto action by reviving him.

What Could Itachi Do in the Series?

Itachi’s role in a potential comeback will depend on how he will be back in the series and who brings him back. A villain could bring Itachi back to fight against Sarada, Boruto, Naruto, or Sasuke; alternatively, another character could bring Itachi back to aid the main character. Furthermore, Itachi’s clone could be introduced with a goal, and then turn against those who revived him.

Some fans would probably like to see Itachi helping the main characters and doing things right this time. For this reason, the idea of Itachi just “appearing” in the series thanks to a document or something similar seems to be the best way to put him in the series. Alternatively, Itachi could return in a plot set in an alternate universe, where we would encounter an alternate version of him.
