The Quirk One For All inMy Hero Academiabecomes increasingly difficult to pass on to new wielders as it continues to grow in power. We find out in the story that it was only by pure luck that the Quirk had managed to last this long.Toshinori Yagi and Izuku Midoriya, being Quirkless,ended up being necessary for One For All’s development and the eventual defeat of the Quirk’s arch-nemesis: All For One.
Given the difficulty of finding new bearers of One For All, who would make the best successor for it after Deku was finished with his turn? Could One For All have continued for future generations without the story’s events, or had it reached the limits of what it could achieve inMy Hero Academia?
Potential Candidates
While Many Options Exist, Some Stand Out
InMy Hero Academia: Heroes Rising,the idea of Deku transferring One For Allis toyed with when Midoriya attempts to give it to Bakugo to defeat the movie’s powerful villain. Bakugo is seen taking to the power right away, able to effectively combine it with his Explosion Quirk to devastating results. The combination of Deku and Bakugo using One For All together finally overwhelms the villain, causing Deku to say goodbye to the Quirk and think his time is over. However, because Bakugo lost consciousness, the transfer of One For All was revealed to be only temporary, allowing Deku to continue to be its wielder.
Bakugo would make a good choiceto pass on One For All if Deku had the option to do so at the end of the story, though it would shorten Bakugo’s lifespan because he already has a quirk. This means that Deku would probably only transfer it to him if a similar situation occurred to what happened inHeroes Rising. It’s possible that if he were chosen to be a successor, Bakugo would have to willingly give up his Explosion Quirk so that he could accept One For All’s power without experiencing its lifespan-shortening effects.
Another candidate to be a successor to One For All, Mirio Togata, would also make a powerful wielder of the stockpiling Quirk. Before All Might had chosen Deku to be the next wielder, Mirio was groomed to be the successor instead. At one point in the story, Mirio was even quirkless, which would have been the ideal time for Deku to pass on if he had the next successor in mind. Although Mirio regains his Quirk later thanks to Eri’s help, it’s always possible that the method by which he lost his Quirk in the first place could be repeated to allow him to become a vessel for One For All without too many negative effects.
Already Quirkless Might Be Best
The Longevity of One For All is Questionable
If Dekuhad the longevity of One For Allin mind, he would likely have chosen someone quirkless like himself when searching for a successor. As One For All stockpiles more power, finding a proper vessel to contain it becomes harder and harder. The ideal successor would be someone with a powerful body and who doesn’t already have a quirk of their own.
“That guy is quirk-less. He’s just a tough old man.” -Shōta Aizawa after facing Knuckleduster.
In the spin-off seriesVigilantes, we meet a character who could be the next prime candidate for One for All. The character Knuckleduster, despite being Quirkless when we meet him, can stand toe-to-toe with powerful villains with just his natural strength.Knuckleduster also shares some thematic similaritieswith All Might, making him a fitting successor to the power if Deku could transfer it to him. Given Knuckleduster’s backstory, inheriting One For All and becoming the next successor to the power would also be fitting revenge against All for One and the horrible circumstances Knuckleduster underwent in the world ofMy Hero Academia.

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the “One-For-All” quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
