The following contains minor spoilers for My Hero Academia.

Despite the high standards of UA High School inMy Hero Academia, two students originally born without Quirks were able to pass the entrance exams and earn a spot in the hero course. It’s interesting that despite this supposed impossibility being stressed at the beginning of the series, it turns out that not just one but two people could get in without possessing their own Quirks.

In both of these cases, the students who made it to 1-A were given Quirks they were not originally born with, though the circumstances for each student were drastically different. These two students broke the mold, and it’s possible that in the future world ofMy Hero Academia, more will follow because of how powerful support items have become in the series.

Izuku is ready for the next battle - My Hero Academia

Izuku Midoriya a.k.a. Deku

How a Quirkless Fanboy Became One of UA’s Top Students

The primary narrative in My Hero Academiais the story of how Izuku Midoriya rose from his humble beginnings to become one of the greatest heroes in the world. Born Quirkless, he refused to give into despair, instead doubling down to pursue his dream of becoming a hero without powers. This was shown through his determination to get into UA and his plan to take the entrance exam before his fateful meeting with All Might and One For All.

“There’s no way you’re getting into the hero course without a Quirk!” -An unnamed classmate mocking Midoriya in Episode 1.

Yuga Aoyama in My Hero Academia (5)

It was seen as completely unprecedented for someone to get into UA without a Quirk, a fact that Deku himself acknowledgedwith his encyclopedic understanding of the world of heroes.

“Well, actually they got rid of that rule. I could be the first one.” -Izuku Midoriya responding to his classmate.

In a way, Izuku ended up being one of the first ones to enter UA, being born Quirkless, though he did lean on a Quirk he was later given. After inspiring All Might to defeat the Sludge Villain, Izuku was granted the Quirk One For All, which is one of the few Quirks in existence that can be transferred between people. Despite finally having a Quirk, Izuku could only use it sparingly because it would destroy his unadapted body. This meant that most of the time in the early days,Izuku was getting by in the hero coursethrough his wits and base strength alone. This is an impressive feat, given how he was going against powerful Quirk users in direct competition. He managed to come in first during the Sports Festival race, despite not using his Quirk once in the competition.

Yuga Aoyama a.k.a. Can’t Stop Twinkling

Like Deku, His Body Also Couldn’t Handle His Quirk

Throughout much of the series, Yuga’s birth as a Quirkless person is hidden from the audience. It is later revealed that Yuga’s Quirk was given to him by the series’ villain, All for One, himself. Yuga’s family was threatened by All for One, and he was forced to become a double agent to further the villain’s goals. Yuga despised his role in aiding the villains against his hero friends and empathized with Izuku as someone whose body also couldn’t handle their Quirk.

Yuga was given the Quirk dubbed Navel Laser, which lets him shoot a continuous beam from his belly button. In the beginning, he could barely keep the laser active for more than a second and needed to use a belt support item to focus his beam. As he trains at UA, Yuga manages to overcome some of the drawbacks of the Quirk, allowing him to manifest it in the form of an energy blade known as Navel Saber.

Eventually,Yugais able to redeem himself by betraying All for One, and he goes on to become a pro-hero himself by the time the series ends. Interestingly, despite gaining Quirks, both Izuku and Yuga relied on support items at various points to perform as heroes. During the series’ epilogue, we see that Izuku uses a suit to continue his hero work after the events of the final war arc. With how advanced support items have become in the world ofMy Hero Academia,it would not be surprising if more individuals born without Quirks could make it to the hero course of UA in the future.
