InZOIlaunched at the end of March in early access. As an early access game with several big updates planned,InZOIlaunched in a state that was fairly empty and missing key features that would give it more depth and immersion.

One of the major features that was promised before its launch was the inclusion of same-sex romantic relationships, marriage, and families. Unfortunately, while players could make their own same-sex attracted Zois, all the NPC Zois spawned in-game were heterosexual, making it impossible for players to enter a relationship with in-game Zois. WhileInZOI’s June 13 updatewent a long way to improve this,InZOIstill needs some changes to improve its LGBT representation.

InZOI’s June 13th Update Brings More LGBT Inclusivity

InZOI’s lack of LGBT Zois was apparently a bug, which led to promises that it would be addressed inInZOI’s first major update. The June 13 update did bring a fix to this problem, alongside more gameplay options that add depth to family gameplay. Now,all Zois can have children without needing to be married, and have the option of adopting or having a baby with Medical Help, which lets LGBT Zois have children together that share their genetics.

The above fixes are a massive step forward forInZOIin terms of representation and delivering what was promised before the game launched. With the new update,InZOIintroduces randomized sexual preferences for NPC Zois. This means that same-sex couples can now form naturally within the game world, and players will encounter a variety of relationship types during gameplay. Players can also go into Creator Studio to adjust attraction preferences. This fix addresses one of the game’s most glaring oversights, and bringsInZOImore in line with the flexibility that players expect from a life simulator.

inZOI delays early access release date

In addition to relationship preferences, the update also expands family-building options for both LGBT and straight couples. Players can now have their Zois pursue parenthood, either through Medical Help or adoption, features that were absent from the initial early access release. This is a welcome improvement, offering same-sex couples the same parenting possibilities that heterosexual couples have enjoyed since the game’s launch. The ability to create diverse family structures adds important depth toInZOI’s simulation of modern life and reduces the gap betweenInZOIand competitors likeThe Sims 4, where such options have been part of the game for years.

InZOI Needs to Expand Its LGBT Representation

However, these mechanical improvements do not fully address the broader issue of LGBTQ+ representation inInZOI. While sexual orientation and family-building features are now more inclusive, the game’s customization options remain noticeably limited when compared to other titles in the genre, and excludes trans Zois outside non-binary identities. The Sims 4’s gender customization options offer far more diversity, but also fall short in terms of its body frame and clothing options, which is an area whereInZOIcould surpassThe Sims 4.

Pride-themed items are currently missing fromInZOI’s catalog. By contrast,The Sims 4features a wide range of Pride-related content and regularly includes items created in collaboration with LGBTQ+ designers and organizations. This not only allows players to create characters that reflect their identities but also brings cultural visibility into the everyday environments of the game.

Despite these shortcomings,InZOI’s June updaterepresents meaningful progress as it seeks to establish itself as a serious contender in the life simulation space. The addition of randomized NPC sexual preferences, the inclusion of adoption and Medical Help births for same-sex couples, and the willingness to respond to player feedback suggest that the developers are aware of the importance of representation and are prepared to address it. Still, forInZOIto match the depth and visibility of LGBTQ+ content found inThe Sims 4, future updates will need to focus on expanding identities and visible inclusivity, rather than just the relationship mechanics.
