DeltaruneChapters 3 and 4 recently came out on PC and consoles and, just like the previous two chapters, they were very well-received by fans and critics alike. They expanded on this unique and fascinating world that Toby Fox and his team have been carefully crafting for over seven years, while also featuring many fun and creative fights, engaging puzzles, lovable characters, and an excellent soundtrack.

Needless to say, the plot ofDeltaruneis incredibly mysterious and intriguing (to the point it has fueled many popular fan theories), and, as a result, the first two chapters left fans with many questions. While Chapters 3 and 4 fortunately explained many crucial things, they have also left fans with evenmore questions that absolutely need to be answered in the upcomingChapter 5, with the following eight being the most important so far.

Ralsei tells Susie to not look at the final chapter of the prophecy - Deltarune

8What Did The End Of The Prophecy Say?

Chapter 4 Ended On An Egregious Cliffhanger

InChapter 4: Prophecy,Kris and Susie (and, by extension, the player) finally get a good glimpse at the fullprophecyabout thethree heroes who’ll seal the dark fountains and save the Light and Dark Worlds. However, they also learn that literally the entire prophecy is written, including future events that haven’t transpired yet, and that Ralsei has been hiding this from them the entire time. At the very end of the chapter, Susie gets ahead of the group and reads the part of the prophecy that Ralsei has been trying to hide from her.

Kris and the player never get to read what Susie does, but judging by Susie and Ralsei’s dramatic reactions, it must have been something quite tragic that may affect the former bully in one way or another. Maybe she’ll have to sacrifice either herself or someone close to her (like Kris or Noelle)? This shocking revelation definitely had a huge impact on Susie, because at the very end of Chapter 4, she assures Kris and herself that they aren’t going to let “that” happen.

Carol tells Susie to leave the Holiday household - Deltarune

7What’s Going On With The Holiday Family?

Dess’ Ambiguous Fate And Carol’s Suspicious Behavior

Susie’s romantic interest,Noelle Holiday, is definitely one of the most popular characters inDeltarune, but her family is quite bizarre and suspicious, to say the least. Firstly, she constantly mentions her older sister,December, who used to be part of their friend group, until something happened that hurt her so much that it either killed her or caused her disappearance. Judging by the reaction of her younger sister and her parents, this ambiguous event had a major impact on all the Holidays.

However,Deltarune’s fourth chapter finally gave players a full look at Noelle’s mother,Carol, the always-busy mayor of Hometown. It was already implied that she was quite cold and strict with her daughter in previous chapters. However, her appearance was extremely suspicious. She suddenly arrived at the Holiday household just a few seconds after the unknown figure, who was working with Kris’ hollow body, told them on the phone that they would arrive soon to prevent Susie from taking a look at Dess’ guitar. This one scene raised so many questions: Is Carol working with the bad guys? What does she know about the Dark World, the dark fountains, and the Roaring Knight? Are her actions related to Dess’ disappearance?

Kris, Susie and Ralsei confront the Roaring Knight in Chapter 3 - Deltarune

6Who Is The Roaring Knight?

Fans Still Don’t Know The Real Identity Of The Game’s Big Bad

The main antagonists of the first two chapters, King and Queen, briefly mentioned that they were aligned with a mysterious “knight” and, at the very end ofChapter 3: Late Night, the three main characters (and the player)finally met the infamousRoaring Knightin person, who would later go on to become the main antagonist ofChapter 4: Prophecy. While they’re definitely quite powerful and their design is extremely intimidating, not much else has been revealed about this villain so far.

Deltarunefans have been wondering who the Roaring Knight is for a long time, since it’s heavily implied that they’re a real person from the Light World, and that they are working with Kris’ hollow body to keep making dark fountains around Hometown. Because of the aforementioned scene at the Holiday household, some fans believe that they may be Carol Holiday herself, while others theorize that the Roaring Knight has actually been Dess all along, which would explain her sudden disappearance.

Kris rips their heart (soul) out - Deltarune

5What’s Happening To Kris’ Body?

Players Are Not In Full Control Of The Main Playable Character

At the very beginning ofDeltarune’sfirst chapter, the player is tasked with creating a custom body and even granting them a name, until they’re completely discarded, and a mysterious voice says that “no one can choose who they are in this world.” This bizarre scenesets the stage for the unconventional relationshipbetween the player and the playable character,Kris Dreemurr. While, throughout most of the game, they act as a normal non-speaking protagonist, they occasionally rip their own soul from their body and move completely by themselves, out of the player’s control, to perform malicious acts, like slashing their mother’s tires and even creating dark fountains in Hometown.

It is heavily implied that the player is not actually controlling Kris, but only their soul, and that they’re aware of it on some level. However, even after four chapters, it’s still not entirely clear why or how this has happened to the young Dreemurr, even though it definitely has something to do with the mysterious voice who communicates with them through the phone, and maybe even with the Roaring Knight itself.

Asgore telling Kris' soul about his plans - Deltarune

4What Did Asgore Dreemurr Do?

The Truth Behind Toriel And Asgore’s Fractured Relationship

Kris and Asriel’s parents,Asgore and Toriel Dreemurr, got divorced sometime before the beginning of the game, and their current relationship is complicated, to say the least. While Asgore is constantly portrayed as a soft and kind guy who’s trying to convince his ex-wife to take him back, Toriel keeps rejecting him, and it seems like she’s holding a lot of resentment towards him. At first, this seemed like a silly reference toAsgore and Toriel’s relationship back inUndertale, but as more chapters were released, it became more and more evident that this is actually an important part ofDeltarune’splot.

So far, it has never been explained why exactly the Dreemurrs got divorced, but it must have been something very serious for Toriel to treat her ex-husband the way she does. Curiously enough, when the player is controlling Kris’ disembodied soul while inside Noelle’s house in Chapter 4, there’s an optional interaction with Asgore, in which he refers to the soul as his “old friend” and that “soon Tori will finally see what really happened.” Due to this cryptic dialogue, combined with the fact that he arrived at the house shortly before Carol, many fans believe that Asgore did something really objectionable that caused him to work with the Roaring Knight.

Undyne confronts the Roaring Knight at the end of Chapter 3 - Deltarune

3What Happened To Undyne?

She Was Never Seen Again After Chapter 3’s Shocking Ending

Just when Kris, Susie, and Ralsei were defeated bythe Roaring Knight at the end ofChapter 3: Late Night, they were saved by one ofUndyne’s magic spears. That’s right, Hometown’s bizarre police officer, who was making fun of Kris every time they mentioned the Dark World, finally arrived in this fantastical alternate dimension, just in time to save them from the main villain (although it’s never explicitly stated whether she stumbled upon the Dark World by accident or if she was aware of its existence the entire time).

However, the Roaring Knight changes their priorities and decides to kidnap Undyne instead of Toriel, so they drag her out of the TV World and enter a shelter in the Light World. Kris and Susie don’t have access to the shelter as a mysterious code locks the door. That’s the last time Undyne was seen inDeltarune’s story, and the two main Lightner heroes spend most of Chapter 4 trying to decipher the code that will allow them to enter the Dark World within the shelter and save her. Susie does mention that one of the emblems drawn on the door looked like a police badge, which implies that Undyne may actually be a key part of the Knight’s evil plans.

Sans tells Kris that they can’t meet his brother yet - Deltarune

2What Is Papyrus Up To?

One Of Undertale’s Most Iconic Characters Is Mysteriously Missing From Deltarune

SinceDeltaruneis a spiritual successor toUndertale, some iconic characters that originated from the first game (like Toriel, Asgore, Undyne and Gerson) do have big roles inDeltarune’sstory, while many others make small, but fun, cameos throughout Hometown. One of the most notorious examples isSans, the relaxed and goofy skeleton who makes puns and befriends Kris’ mother. However, much to the surprise of the fan base,Sans' younger brother,Papyrus, has yet to appear.

This is especially weird because Sans has mentioned having a younger brother on more than one occasion. At the end of Chapter 1, he asks Kris to spend time with him, and in Chapter 2, he says that things haven’t worked out for some reason and that they won’t be able to meet him yet. To add even more intrigue to this mystery, the player can visit Sans’ house and, according to the dialogue box, they’ll hear “the distant trousle of bones.” The fact that a character as beloved as Papyrus has not appeared inDeltaruneis both suspicious and bizarre, but, knowing Toby Fox’s sense of humor, this may either end up as an important plot development or in a very silly joke.

1What’s The Connection With Undertale?

A Huge Question That Fans Have Been Asking Since 2018

Deltaruneis not only Toby Fox’s latest project, but it also seems to be connected withUndertale, since both games share characters, mechanics, terminologies, and themes. However, since it doesn’t seem to be a direct sequel, the exact nature of this connection remains unclear. The creator himself has already explicitly statedthatDeltarunedoesn’t take place in the world ofUndertale, and that this is an entirely different setting with its own rules.

However, the ambiguous nature of his statement, combined with the events thatunfold in Chapters 3 and 4,has fueled fan speculation abouthow these two games are connected. Some believe thatDeltarunetakes place in an alternate dimension created by the mysterious character W.D. Gaster. In contrast, many others theorize that the entire adventure may be a tabletop RPG session that Frisk is playing with their monster friends. The connection between these two games has been a topic of speculation among the fanbase since 2018, so it needs to be clarified in either Chapter 5 or any of its follow-ups.
