Summary

The Legend of Zeldafans reacted to the latest update about the film. However, many reactions had nothing to do with the news.

Nintendo announcedtheLegend of Zeldalive-action in November 2023. The move is significant in bringing the beloved video game franchise to the big screen. Wes Ball, known for directingThe Maze Runnerseries, is attached to direct the upcoming movie, while Derek Connolly will write the script.Zeldafans are looking forward to the project, but its creator recently announced that the movie will be delayed. The announcement received several reactions, but many expressed their dissatisfaction with the direction the film was heading.

On Monday,Shigeru Miyamotogave a disappointing update that the live-action would be delayed. Many fans aren’t bothered, so long as the movie is good. However, many reactions had nothing to do with the delayed release date. Instead, they were more disappointed that the upcomingLegend of Zeldaproject was a live-action because they preferred it to be animated. One claimed that a lot could go wrong with a live-action adaptation, but those issues could easily be solved if the movie were animated. Another shared the same sentiment, noting that it would have “made history” if they created one like that ofSpiderman: Across the Spider-VerseorPuss in Boots. A different user felt the same way, writing: “Honestly…. I REALLY don’t want a live action Zelda movie.” According to the user, Nintendo’s live-action gave them uncanny feelings, so for the X user, theZeldamovie should have been an animated project, not a live-action.

Back to Miyamoto’s original post, theLegend of Zeldacreator said that they would be pushing back the release date of the anticipated movie six weeks later. Initially, the live-action was set for release on July 29, 2025. However, Miyamoto said the new release date would be May 7 of the same year. Miyamoto explained that they would use the additional weeks to “make the film as good as it can be.” He also thanked fans for their understanding and patience.Zeldaenthusiasts were supportive of the move. In fact, they encouraged Miyamoto to take their time so long as the film would be great once completed.

The Legend of Zelda, being a live-action or animated film, is a hot topic among fans. It’s understandable why they are divided, with some preferring the former and others wanting the latter. A live-action film is indeed promising, but it will be very disappointing when done wrong. Also, there are a lot of elements from the game that are difficult to capture in the live-action. On the other hand, animation allows the film to capture the game’s artistic style fully and allows more freedom for great world-building. For instance, it will be more achievable to featureHyrule, a fantastical land with floating islands and elemental dungeons, in an animated setup. They can also use visual cues, color, and movements to evoke emotions and connect with the audience. An animated Legend of Zelda movie makes the film feel more magical and timeless, just like the game. However, a live-action film offers broader appeal, higher marketability, and a potential box office clout when done right. But the same could be said of an animated movie. They could create one in the style ofArcane,Spider-Verse, orPredator: Killer of Killers. Regardless, fans are getting a live-action. Hopefully, the film will deliver.

The Legend of Zeldamovie will hit theaters on July 31, 2025.
