Windtraps are unlockable water production stations inDune: Awakeningthat allow players to solve the problem ofwater productionto an extent by making it almost entirely autonomous. When active, this machine gathers water from the environment over time.

With a proper Windtrap water farm setup, players will never have to worry about getting enough water for quenching thirst, ore production, and miscellaneous tasks needed around the base. This guide covers how to get Windtraps up and running, how they collect and store water, and whether they are worth using over other means of water production.

How to Get Windtraps in Dune: Awakening

Windtraps become available after their blueprint has been researched using Intel. They require the following materials in order to be crafted:

Steel Ingotscan be obtained by combining Iron Ingots (processed from Iron Ore common in the Vermillius Gap),Carbon Ore(found in Jabal Eifrit Al-Janub), and Water.Silicone Blockscan be obtained by combiningFlour Sand(obtained using a compactor in Flour Sand deposits) and water. Finally,Calibrated Servoksare found in Khidr’s Shadow in the Jabal Eifrit Al-janub or the CHOAM Mineral Extraction Facilities in the Hagga Rift.

How to Use Windtraps in Dune: Awakening

Windtraps are objects that can be placed anywhere within the range of a player’sSub-Fief Consolein open air, but theyrequire Filters to remain operational. Filters don’t inherently provide Windtraps with any bonuses; their only function is to keep the device running, with better Filters provide more uptime.

Dune: Awakeningwill allow players to place Windtraps indoors, but they will not produce any water in this state. These machines need to be outside to function.

There are two types of Filters for regular Windtrap: Makeshift Filters (3 hours) and Standard Filter (8 hours). Filters can only be made at theSurvival Fabricator, a device players will have to unlock via Research (requires Intel).

Once a Windtrap is placed, it has enough power (75), and a Filter installed, it will continue producing water at the rate of 0.75 (calculated in seconds), which comes out to45ml per minute,2,700ml per hour,64,800ml per day.

Windtraps have an internal capacity of 500ml of water, which means they’ll at most be able to store water they produce for 11 minutes if you have no water storage containers like Cisterns present in the base. Fortunately,Windtraps are automatically connected to the Water Circuitand will automatically deposit produced water in other water containers in the base as long as they are within range of the same Sub-Fief Console.

TheWater Circuit is the combined capacity your base has to hold water. It includes all containers that can hold water, mainly consistenting of Cisterns but also including structures like Deathstills and Blood Purifiers.

Are Windtraps Worth Using in Dune: Awakening

Windtraps shine in offline play. Since they remain functional even when the player goes offline, they can keep a base’s water supply topped up and ready to go when players log back in to play.

However, in terms of production efficiency, Windtraps are an incredibly inefficient way to gather water.Using a Dew Reaper Scythe or a Deathstill will produce significantly more waterin a much shorter span of time than a Windtrap. If players are in need of a lot of water urgently, installing Windtraps is a bad call; they’ll be much better served relying on other methods.

Active work will yield higher rewards in the short term, but making water production fully autonomous should be the end goal of every player, and Windtraps are a way to achieve that. A dedicatedWindtrap water farm should be left for the super-late gamewhen players are ready tohead into the Deep Desertand leave their primary base in the Hagga Basin behind.
