Elden Ring Nightreignoffers a fast-paced spin on the original game’s core gameplay mechanics. While the two games are largely similar in terms of visual fidelity, players have already been struggling with some performance issues on PC. One of the most notable has been an issue that’scausingElden Ring Nightreignto freeze entirelyand, in some cases, kick players from their game. This guide will explain the available methods for resolving the freezing issue and what appears to be causing it.
What’s Causing the Elden Ring Nightreign Freezing Issues?
It’s Not Just Your Game!
In this instance,Bandai Namco has seemingly already confirmedthatElden Ring Nightreignhas some performance issues when players are “using the latest graphics cards,“and that they “may experience frame rate drops.” This seems to be related to the stuttering issue that other players are facing, but the two are most likely linked. On theSteam forums for the game, players are noting that they’re facing this freezing issue when running a 40 and 50-series NVIDIA RTX graphics card. These are the last and current generation of NVIDIA’s GPU line.
This isn’t an ideal situation, but Bandai Namco has offered some suggestions on how to resolve the issue.
How to Fix Freezing in Elden Ring Nightreign on PC
There are some different potential solutions to the problem. Bandai Namco recommends some of these, while some players have also found another potential short-term solution while the development team rolls out a more permanent fix. These solutions are:
Each of these is explained in more detail below.
Verify Integrity of Game Files
The first thing to try isverifying the integrity of the game files forElden Ring Nighteign. This is done by following the steps below:
This process can take a little while to complete, as Steam may have to redownload some of the game files. Once this is done and the progress bar is complete, try reloading the game. This is also advised if you’re finding thatElden Ring Nightreignwon’t open.
Change Graphics Settings
The next thing to try is adjusting the in-gamegraphics settings. To do this, open up the Settings menu and navigate to ‘Graphics’ at the bottom of the sidebar. Once here, try toggling the graphical settings from the default ‘High’ option to either ‘Medium’ or ‘Low.’ Bandai Namco also recommends lowering the screen resolution if lowering the graphics settings doesn’t resolve the issue on its own. This isn’t ideal, as the game won’t look as visually impressive, but if it resolves the freezing issue, it’s a worthwhile sacrifice for the moment. IfSteam Deck players are affected, they will want to lower the settingsas much as possible.
Check for the Latest Graphics Card Drivers
Most graphics cards now receive new drivers on or just before a major game release. This applies to both NVIDIA and AMD cards, so regardless of which you’re using, make sure you’re running the latest version. To do this, open up the NVIDIA and go to the ‘Drivers’ tab. If a new one is available, it will be clear from a banner at the top of this page. For the AMD app, go to the ‘Home’ screen, and you should see the ‘Current Version’ and ‘Status’ of your driver in the top right corner of the screen.
Use Task Manager
According to some players on the Steam forums page linked earlier, opening up the task manager mid-game can stop the game from freezing. Others have said that this doesn’t permanently fix the issue, so players might have to keep using Ctrl + Alt + Esc throughout the session, which isn’t ideal when there are challenging bosses to beat.
If all of these fail to resolve the issue, unfortunately, the only other option is to wait for a fix to be rolled out from the development team. Bandai Namco has confirmed it’s investigating the cause, and once this has been identified, a fix will most likely be rolled out.
