Players starting theirDeltarunejourney will start with its first chapter. Both the first and second chapters of this gameare completely free, and will let players see if this is a game they will enjoy. Players will meet many interesting characters along the way. Some will be friendly; others will be on the opposite side of a battle screen.
The final hurdle before playersstart to worry about Chapter 2will be overcoming this chapter’s final boss, the King. However, players will be able to choose if they wish to fight using combat or attempt to solve this conflict like a true pacifist.
How to Defeat the King in Deltarune (Chapter 1)
Once players have made itthrough the rest of Chapter 1, they will face off against the King as its final boss. As always, Kris will be first in line to make a choice. Players should choose Act first, then select the Ralsei option of Talk. This will give them access to Dual Heal when they need it.
They can follow this up by attacking with Susie. Next time they have access to Kris, use the Susie option to Talk. This will give Susie her Redbuster. Redbuster will deal very good damage. Keep up the offensive, and use healing options when needed. Once the king has taken enough damage, he will fall to his knees and the battle will be won. Just likemany of this chapter’s puzzles, the King’s attacks are card-themed.
Spade Rain
The King has a range of attacks of his own. The first will be spade-shaped icons coming from both sides. Simply move up and down.
Always try to just avoid damage to build up TP.
Spade Arrows
A red line will appear, and a spear-like projectile will move along this line. Avoid being wherever any recent red lines appear to avoid all arrows.
Chain Hook
The King will hook the green box and move it up and down as a single line of spades comes from one side. This is actually easier than the above attacks, as players can find their rhythm of moving faster/slower against predictable spade attacks.
Spike Box
A box with spikes inside it will bounce around the screen with the player’s heart icon inside it. Avoid touching the box as it bounces to avoid damage.
Hook Box
The King will throw a red hook into the box, causing it to fire hooks of its own that will pull it towards that direction.
There is a hard variant of this attack where the screen is also filled with spades. Players will need to avoid touching the edge of the box and the spades at the same time.
Can You Spare the King in Deltarune (Chapter 1)?
No. There is no means of making the king’s text colour change to yellow, or even blue for that matter. However, players can still overcome this fight without resorting to violence. To do this, players will simply need to wait out the fight.
Players do not need to attack or act, but should instead triple down on using Defend for all three characters. This will give them the best odds of making their way to the end of the fight. The dialogue will differ slightly depending on which method players use to beat the king. Players will then be able to enjoy some light world lore. Exploring this lore can help increase theenjoyment of future chapters.
If players do take significant damage during this fight, they should rather use an item to top up their health and go back to defending on subsequent turns.
