The world ofDeltaruneis one full of mysteries, just like its predecessorUndertale. While the various secrets and puzzles are what normally has leaves fans confused, some players have been digging into the lore to try and understand just how old Kris, Susie, and Ralsei are inDeltarune. While there is no guaranteed answer, there are some theories floating around based on some details in the game that could easily be missed if you aren’t looking for them. To bring all the main theories together around the main characters' ages as of the end of Chapter 4, this guide will cover the main discussion points within the community.
How Old Are Kris and Susie in Deltarune?
It’s suggested that Kris and Susie are around 14-17 years of age. However, as the developer, Toby Fox, hasn’t confirmed any actual age as canon or lore, fans have been left to theorize how old the main characters are inDeltarune. Below, I’ve highlighted a few key details in the game that can be used to deduce the age range noted above.
Again, this is only based on what details in the game infer. Nothing has been confirmed as lore or canon, even after the release of Chapters 3 and 4.
They Go to High School and Are Referred to as Teens
These two bits of information help us narrow down the age range quite significantly. As they’re not described as adults or young adults, some fans in the community have pointed to the fact that this suggests they are between 13-18.
Some of the Characters Have Jobs
Some of the other teenagers in the game have jobs, such as Berdly who works in the library, and Catti in the diner. If we’re assuming thatDeltarunefollows US labor laws, then they’d have to be at least 14 years old. However, because neither Kris, Ralsei, or Susie have jobs themselves, this doesn’t guarantee that they’re not 13 and are simply some of the younger kids in their class.
Toriel Says Kris Is Going to University Soon
One piece of evidence pointing to Kris and Susie being around the upper limit of that age range is a line or two of dialogue that Toriel says if you talk to Toriel atthe end of Chapter 1. Specifically, she mentions that Kris “has grown up so much” and that “someday soon you will be going off to university as well…”
While this doesn’t mention Kris' specific age, with some reading between the lines, it does point to them being around the 16-17 mark, as this would be just before they’d go off to college/university.
How Old Is Ralsei in Deltarune?
There are a few different things to consider when it comes to Ralsei’s age. The first is his physical appearance, that many suggest point to him being slightly younger than both Kris and Susie. This would put him potentially in the eighth grade, which would mean thatRalsei is 13-14 years of age. However, there is the complexity of his true origin that makes things a little bit murkier and mean thatwe can never know how old Ralsei truly is.
Ralsei Is a Darkner
Unlike Kris and Susie, Ralsei is a Darkner, which means that he was essentially created by a Dark Fountain. This therefore means that Ralsei’strueage is whatever the age is of the fountain that he was created from. The fact that he presents himself as a certain age in the game does not confirm that he is actually that many days old. It’s also unclear exactly how age and time as concepts work for Darkners.
This is made even clearer bySpamton in Chapter 2. He was born the day that we met him, but appears much older than the rest of the group. It may also depend on how long the dark worlds have been around for. If they’ve been around for a long time, then it’s feasible that Ralsei is a lot older than he appears.
The Asriel Anagram
Eagle-eyed fans might have noticed that Ralsei is also an anagram of Asriel. There is a theory believed by some fans that this suggests Ralsei might be supposed to represent or be linked to Asriel in some way, and so they would also be of a similar age. Given that we know Asriel is in his first year of college, this would suggest that he is 18 or 19.
