Summary
Star Wars Battlefront 3is unlikely to happen as an internal emailed leaked online reveals EA’s future plans, with no mention of a newStar Warstitle outside of Respawn Entertainment’s thirdStar Wars: Jedigame. Fans of the series are currently petitioning for a third entry by giving 2017’sStar Wars Battlefront 2a massive player resurgence, but the community’s efforts look like they could be in vain.
The sudden player resurgence began shortly after the finale ofAndorSeason 2 premiered, which received rave reviews from viewers. The finale likely had a huge impact on player’s returning toBattlefront 2, alongside the much-celebrated yearly event that is May the fourth. But it hasn’t just seen players return to the eight year old title, as one fan has even started apetition for EA to developBattlefront 3. As of writing, it has almost 15,000 signatures, with the petition arguging that theStar WarsIP has contributed “signficantly” to EA’s revenue stream over the past decade and that a third entry in the beloved series would “honor and celebrate the legacy of theStar Warsuniverse.”
Star Wars Battlefront 3 Is Not Part of EA’s Plans
Yesterday, a report fromIGNbroke some disappointing news as it was revealed thatEA had officially canceled itsBlack Panthergame. Fans who were patiently waiting for the title were left heartbroken, as the report also revealed that the studio developing the game, Cliffhanger Games, had been closed. However, the news seems to have brought some added disappointment forStar Warsfans as an internal email reviewed by IGN revealed that EA is now focusing on a small handful of franchises, which includesBattlefield,The Sims,Skate, andApex Legends. While it was noted that there will be continued investment in Motive’sIron Mangame and Respawn’s thirdStar Wars: Jedientry, there was no mention of theBattlefrontseries.
Back in April, Respawn provided anupdate on the nextStar Wars Jedigame, stating that it was “aiming to raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay.” A release date for the title is currently unknown, but it looks like it is now one of the few remainingStar Warsgames in development under EA.
While 2015’sStar Wars Battlefrontreceived positive reviews from players, its 2017 sequel found itself in hot water due to the large number of microtransactions and loot boxes in the shooter. Thankfully, EA drastically overhauled the system before the game’s launch, and it now has a “very positive” review rating on Steam with almost 60,000 player reviews.
Despite the fact that support for the title ended in 2020, a massive player resurgence has seenStar Wars Battlefront 2break its own concurrent player count recordover the weekend. The title’s previous Steam record was set in 2021 with just over 10,000 concurrent players, but four years later it has set a new record with well over 18,000 concurrent players on the platform. Unfortunately, despite the community’s best efforts, continued layoffs and studio closures, as well EA’s plans for future titles, means a thirdStar Wars Battlefrontgame seems highly unlikely.
