Summary
Players in theHelldivers 2fan community are praising the contributions and assistance of the game’s newly-added Super Earth Armed Forces troopers, showing their appreciation for the nameless NPCs. SEAF troopers were added toHelldivers 2alongside the game’s Heart of Democracy update, the latest development in its ongoing galactic war.
Helldivers 2is experiencing a new surge of popularity thanks tothe massive success of Heart of Democracy, the new update developer Arrowhead Game Studios launched on May 20. The update brings the war all the way home, as the Illuminate faction has launched a major invasion of Super Earth, the capital planet ofHelldivers 2and the seat of its authoritarian “Managed Democracy” governmental system. NowHelldivers 2players are dropping straight into the urban centers of Super Earth to do battle with the Illuminate armies and drive them back.
Fighting alongside the player-controlled Helldivers are a new class of ally: the regular Super Earth Armed Forces (SEAF) troopers. It’s these troopers thatHelldivers 2fans like Reddit user Bunny_E621 are showing appreciation for, as they can be “surprisingly effective.” In a shared clip, the computer-controlled SEAF troopers manage to save a Helldiver from being killed by a Flesh Mob, one of thenew Illuminate enemies added in theHelldivers 2Heart of Democracy update. While the Helldiver is stuck reloading their recoilless rifle weapon, the troopers independently fire on the Flesh Mob with their assault rifles and dispatch it with one of their own expendable anti-tank rockets.
Helldivers 2 SEAF Troopers Prove to be Surprisingly Effective in Battle
Though SEAF troops are vastly less able to fight the Illuminate compared to theHelldivers and their many stratagems, they appear in large numbers and move around the map independently, engaging enemies and even attacking objectives like enemy outposts on their own. These minor contributions earned the admiration of players who observed the SEAF troopers managing to do things like clear smaller bases with minimal intervention from players. Players in the community praised Arrowhead for creating “actually useful” NPC allies, who can play a role in battles beyond just adding to the chaos. A few suggested that the SEAF’s reputation for being “cannon fodder” was unfairly earned, saying that becauseHelldivers 2players had never seen a live SEAF soldier fighting before this update, they had an inadequate basis for judging just how capable the average trooper is.
That being said, some players did chime in to point out that incidences of SEAF trooper success were the exception rather than the rule. They shared anecdotes of seeing troopers simply standing around and doing very little while being fired on by enemies, or occasionally destroying themselves with their own grenades and rockets in an echo ofvariousHelldivers 2friendly fire incidents. Others called on Arrowhead to bring SEAF troopers into other parts of the game beyond the defense of Super Earth, as their presence lends a good sense of scale to the galactic war.
