Summary

George R. R. Martin has signed on to produce a new animated movie, and due to the news, fans have now finally thrown in the towel on the hopes of theGame of Thronesauthor ever getting around to writingThe Winds of Winter. The fantasy writer’s highly anticipated sixth installment in the series,The Winds of Winter, recently passed a disappointing new milestone: thelongest wait ever between theA Song of Ice and Fireseries, leaving impatient fans of Martin’s realm of Westeros beyond disappointed at how long it has taken for the book to be finished.

This comes after Martin enraged his loyal fandom yet again byannouncing that he had collaborated with Colossal Bioscienceson the reveal of its first-ever de-extinction of an animal, the dire wolf, leaving fans confused at his involvement in such a massive project while they were still tapping their fingernails for him to finish off the long-delayed next novel in the book series. While fans know that Martin will be helping to produce theElden Ringmovie, alongside Alex Garland as director, it’s seemingly a step too far for many that the acclaimed author has now lined himself up for yet another project, pushing the book’s completion even further down the line.

As recently reported byThe Hollywood Reporter, George R. R. Martin has taken on another project that will see the writer come on to produce a new animated movie,A Dozen Tough Jobs, which is an adaptation of Howard Waldrop’s book that reimagines the Greek classic of the 12 labors of Hercules from the perspective of a former sharecropper fighting to regain his freedom in the 1920s Mississippi. Joe R. Lansdale (Bubba Ho-Tep, Hap & Leonard) is writing the screenplay, alongside animation studio Blue Spirit, which is the same studio behind Netflix’s incredibleBlue Eye Samurai, aseries that Martin previously proclaimed his love for.

Now, asGame of Thronesfans let this news sink in, the fear has grown within Martin’s community that this could mean thatThe Winds of Winteris pushed even further towards the bottom of the writer’s schedule, or even finally put in place that it will never be released. On IGN’s X (formerly Twitter), fans of the fantasy series haven’t been too shy about voicing their disappointment at what seems to be yet another setback. “Anything that will keep him from finishing his books,” said one, with another adding thatThe Winds of Winteris “Never getting finished”.

Another commenter has acknowledged that the book may never see the light of day now that Martin has so many projects on, stating that even if it did come out, the time to be remotely excited about it has now passed. “Accepted ages ago that he’s never going to finish the series. Read all the released ones so far, but it’s been 14 years since the last book. At this point, even if he did finish it, which he won’t, I wouldn’t bother buying it now as interest is long gone for taking so long”.

“If anyone understands the power of epic stories and expansive franchises, it’s George R.R. Martin,” said Lion Forge Entertainment CEO and founder David Steward II. It does seem as though Martin’s attentions have certainly geared more towards TV and movies over recent times, as he is currently involved infour differentGame of Thronesspinoffsand continuing work as a producer onDark Winds, which has been renewed for season 4. So, as it stands, it might be a good idea for fans to pushThe Winds of Winterout of their minds completely, at least for the foreseeable future.
