TheGrand Theft Autoseries is known for crime, sure, but also for its surprisingly fantastic sensibilities when it comes to (often dark) comedy. Enough words have been spoken about the likes of Trevor, CJ, and Tommy Vercetti, the deservingly most popular protagonists, but the cast of side characters plays a huge role in helping everyone’s favorite main characters shine further via how their personalities bounce off of each other.

Across the entireGTAseries, there have been some outrageously funny side characters that have become integral parts of the game, and characters that players might not be able to rely on during a fight, but they will certainly rely on them to provide a barrel of laughs.

10Brucie Kibbutz

Powerfully Funny and Overly Intense

Brucie is a businessman,a car enthusiast, a gym bro, and a life coach. ThoughGTA 4came out even longer ago thanGTA 5, it remains a landmark in terms of predicting how silly society would become. Nowadays, Brucie would likely be a very popular Internet influencer. InGTA 4,however,he’s an overly aggressive steroid abuser who is a lot less in control of his life, especially when it comes to his repressed sexuality. Brucie isn’t just funny - he’s presciently funny.

9Lazlow Jones

A Real Life Music Producer Who Plays Himself in Hillarious Fashion

One of the best things about theGTAseries is its commitment to always coming up with the best soundtrack possible, and thus, Lazlow is the glue that holds theGTAseries together. Lazlow was avoice players can hearon the radio having some hilarious interactions with callers throughout many of the games in the series before finally appearing as a character players can meet inGTA 5. And, turns out that even the life of a popular radio guy isn’t always easy in this world, as evidenced by the hilarious spiraling down in the world of crime he’s experiencing.

8Yusuf Amir

A Returning Character Who Homages Sopranos Comedy

Not many characters get to make a return in theGTAseries. Yusuf first showed up in theGTA 4DLCThe Ballad Of Gay Tony, then made a comeback inGTA Online, on account of being just too much fun to ignore. The Sopranosis naturally a huge influence on all crime stories that came after, and it was a surprisingly hilarious show in its own right. One of the funniest elements of that show was its use of malapropisms, where a bunch of guys who thought they were pretty smart kept on misusing relatively simple words. Yusuf feels likeGTA’stribute to that part of the show specifically, and he’s great.

7Jimmy De Santa

Jimmy De Santa is Michael’s son, and their relationship is clearly based on that of Tony Soprano and his son, AJ Soprano, from the ultra-popularHBO showThe Sopranos.Michael is really good at his job, even if it is crime, but Jimmy is spoiled and will never be able to follow in his footsteps, nor does he want to. That’s good, as Michael doesn’t want that. Unfortunately, however, it seems as if Jimmy might not be good for anything else either, unless we’re counting video games and being mean and ungrateful towards his family an occupation.

6Roman Bellic

So Much More Than a Bowling Partner

Roman is the perfect antithesis to his cousin Niko Bellic. Niko is edgy, gloomy, and hard as nails, whereas Roman is as easy-going as they come. Niko is a criminal, Roman is, well, trying not to be one, but not faring that much better than his cousin for it. Even though he’s the one supposedly trying to live the “American dream”, Roman is more of a fish out of water than his recently arrived criminal cousin. On top of his shenanigans, Roman quickly became one of the game’s most enduring memes because of his recurrent attempts to communicate with Niko, sometimes during very inopportune moments, asking Niko to go bowlingtogether.

5OG Loc

Don’t Forget The Name (Please)

In a game that’s both a tribute and a Satire of ’90s LA gangster culture, Rockstar was aware the company needed to pull out their biggest guns when coming up with the most satirical character in the history of the series, and they didn’t miss with OG Loc. This man who decides to go shirtless in a world where all gangsters tend to wear a specific color to signify their allegiance to players is an amalgamation of hilarious tropes, and having him on CJ’s side during a mission is always a plus - though fits of laughter are a common cause of encountering Game Over screens.

4Devin Weston

Funny Because He’s (Sadly) True

Devin is the kind of tycoon who’ll ask people to commit crimes for him, then say that instead of paying them, he’ll be “investing” the pay without letting the people he should be paying have a say on the matter. Near the climax of the game, Devin Weston meets up with Franklin and asks him to kill his partners while casuallywearing a silly tracksuit.A decade ago, Weston was a ridiculously amped-up version of the boss everyone hates. Nowadays, Weston is not too dissimilar from a regular tycoon of tech, which makes Weston all the more hilarious - and terrifying.

3The Truth

Prophetic, and a Bit Too Odd

The Truth, both the character and the concept itself, is the gift that keeps on giving. This is one of the few characters from the series who’s only gotten even funnier with time. In a media world dominated by conspiracy theorists, it’s just too easy to explain how a conspiracy theory-spewing, psychedelic-loving dude who calls himself “The Truth” ended up as one of the funniest characters in the game. The Truth’s lines are funny, but players should also pay attention to thecharacter’s expressions, which, whether through the game’s beautiful art or even through the game’s older graphics, were always capable of showing that there was always something wild about this character.

2Lamar Davis

Franklin’s Best And Funniest Friend

After the epic opening ofGTA 5,players enter the shoes of Franklin on a simple mission with longtime pal Lamar. Lamar is hilarious in a unique way for aGTAgame, as most of the laughs players will get out of him will be due to the character’s wisecracking abilities, and not because of his ineptitude at crime. Players love theFranklin / Michael / Trevor dynamic, butGTA 5would’ve been just as awesome if it had been a buddy crime game featuring just Franklin and Lamar rising to the top.

1Big Smoke

Bigger Body for Bigger Laughs

Big Smoke’s not merely a comedic presence in the game, as many of his actionsseemingly cheated and broke throughinto real life and have become the stuff of meme legend. Fans have done actual calculations to determine just how much this man was able to eat, and surely nobody will ever be able to forget his unintentionally iconic “all you had to do was follow the damn train, CJ”, line, which would go down in video game history as one of the best “Game Over” screens of all time. Big Smoke is such a cool companion to have that chances are, most players barely even remember this man’s treachery from later in the game.
