Slated to release in 2027,Frostpunk: 1886is an Unreal Engine remake of the originalFrostpunkreleased in 2018. It’s more than a graphical overhaul, however, with 11 bit devs previously confirming it would feature new content, new mechanics, and a new Purpose path, among other features. Some of those new mechanics forFrostpunk: 1886may find their origins inFrostpunk 2.
Frostpunk 2released near the end of 2024, and based on its roadmap, it will be getting free content updates and major DLCs through 2026. There’s only a six-year difference between the release ofFrostpunkandFrostpunk 2, but as game development is rapidly changing, it’s no surprise that somefeatures and mechanics inFrostpunk 2are, as a whole, just better.Frostpunk: 1886will take advantage of these features, revealed game director Maciej Sułecki in a Game Rant interview.
Frostpunk: 1886 Will Borrow Systems and Mechanics From Frostpunk 2
The idea to remake the originalFrostpunkoriginated duringFrostpunk 2’s shift toUnreal Engine, so the two projects have always been closely related. It’s not surprising to know thatFrostpunk: 1886will remake the original but also borrow some features from the sequel. However, Sułecki couldn’t quite confirm a feature list because the team is still evaluating its options. After all, the scale difference betweenFrostpunkandFrostpunk 2is considerable, so any borrowed features need to fit like a glove inFrostpunk: 1886.
As Sułecki explained,
Yeah, we are currently in the process of evaluating the assets and mechanics of the first game, and we have a very solid foundation that we built on Frostpunk 2. We have a lot of systems and a lot of mechanics that we borrow from the second game in the first one. We haven’t decided yet on all those systems because the games are different. Those systems need to fit really, really good with the first one, so there will be, for sure, improvements and quality of life improvements. But we don’t have a solid list yet.
BetweenFrostpunk 2’s post-launch support, the eventualrelease ofFrostpunk: 1886, and the potential support for it throughout 2027, fans are in for a real treat. That is a considerable pipeline of content for the two games stretching, at the very least, the next two years. This is not surprising, however, as 11 bit envisionsFrostpunkas a world and as its own franchise.
There’s no telling what the future holds, but it seemsFrostpunkhas a bright future ahead of it nonetheless. The same could be said for 11 bit studios.Frostpunkis just one of its many games, and the upcomingXbox Game Pass release ofThe Altersbodes well for the company too. It is also publishingMoonlighter 2: The Endless VaultandDeath Howl, both of which are slated for release in 2025 as well.
