Steam has received a newVampire Survivors-like game calledBioprototype, which is available for free for a limited time. TheSteamtitle is the latest to have gameplay aspects similar to those ofVampire Survivors, with some other notable games on the list beingBrotatoandEnter the Gungeon.
Although not the first game of its kind,Vampire Survivorsis often credited for helping to popularize the bullet heaven genre in the gaming community. The indie title, originally built as a solo project by Poncle, has attracted hordes of players since 2022 and has reached over 77K peak concurrent players on Steam at the height of its popularity. Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive engagement received by the game, a number of other developers have tried their hand in the same genre over the past few years, with releases such as20 Minutes Till Dawnachieving reasonable success. Most recently,Vampire Survivors-like mechanicsappeared in a game calledBioprototype, which recently came out on PC two years after first landing on Switch in 2023.
Bioprototypewas released by Emprom Game onSteamon June 01, 2025. Its free status, which started on May 20 and will end on July 20, is compensation for a publisher-related issue that resulted in the game being temporarily removed from the digital storefront. With its roguelike gameplay, it offers a player experience reminiscent of the Poncle-developed game. However, instead of controllingunique combatants as inVampire Survivors, the player is put into the shoes of a prototype organism that must mutate and evolve to survive. Moreover, the fighting with bats and skeletons is replaced by face-offs against swarms of spores and other insect-like entities. The player can choose from a roster of 24 characters and can use 80 different enemy organs to create custom-builds for them. Apart from Steam,Bioprototypeis also available on the Epic Games Store where it is priced at $4.99.
Bioprototype Joins the List of Vampire Survivors-Like Titles
Keeping aside a few differences,Bioprototype, with its auto-firing combat, more or less plays likeVampire Survivors. Interestingly, it is at least the second such title to make its way onto Steam this month, with the other beingTower of Babel: Survivors of Chaosby Nanoo. But, in addition toVampire Survivors, the latter game also features certain elements of theDiabloseries.
While the enthusiasts get their dose ofVampire Survivors-like gameplay from the aforementioned title, work to transform the highly popular game into a live-action film is also underway. As revealed in January 2025 by Poncle, theVampire Survivorsmovieis being made by Story Kitchen, which is a media firm specializing in video game adaptations.
