Summary
FormerStar Wars Jedi: Survivordirector Stig Asmussen’s new studio has announced its first game: an action-adventure title set in theDungeons and Dragonsuniverse. Asmussen has quite the resume, including leadership on theStar Wars Jediseries as well as work on the originalGod of Wartrilogy. Now, theStar Wars Jedi: Survivorskipper is moving from one beloved franchise to another.
When theJedi: Survivordirector first announced the formation of his new studio, Giant Skull, the company announced its first game would be a AAA single-player game built in Unreal Engine 5. Beyond that, though, details remained scarce. Some suggested that Asmussen and his team could work on anotherStar Warstitle, but now Giant Skull has revealed it’s teaming up with Wizards of the Coast for its debut.
A June 2 press release confirmed that Giant Skull’s promised single-player action-adventure game will be aD&Dtitle for PC and consoles. It’s a fitting collaboration, as Wizards of the Coast president John Hight previously worked with Asmussen onGod of War 3. The game is still in its early stages, so most details are unclear for now, but Asmussen said it will feature the “immersive storytelling, heroic combat, and exhilarating traversal” fans have come to expect fromD&D. It’ll be interesting to see if the game incorporates any of the recent changes to other parts of the franchise, likeD&D’s first new class in six yearsthat it just started testing.
Giant Skull Games Is Working on a Single-Player Dungeons and Dragons Game
The choice to make the game a single-player adventure is also intriguing. Many iterations of the franchise are collaborative affairs, withD&Dbeing one of the best TTRPGs for large groups. Of course, there are plenty of single-player experiences within theDungeons and Dragonsuniverse, so this isn’t necessarily new ground, but the choice to avoid multiplayer functionality entirely is interesting.
Giant Skull’s debut title isn’t the only AAA video game in the works from Hasbro’s gaming division. WhileWizards of the Coast canceled a big-budget project from Skeleton Key, that studio still has something in the works. Invoke Studios is also working on a separateD&Daction-adventure game with a focus on magic. What exactly Giant Skull’s project will entail and how it will differentiate itself from these others is still a mystery, but the studio has solid momentum, given its employees' former work. Fans ofStar Wars JediandGod of Warshould keep an eye on the studio.
