Square Enix and Wizards of the Coast announced earlier this year that theFinal Fantasyseries would be crossing over withMagic: The Gatheringfor the first time ever in the card game’s history. This all-new collaboration, which is set to launch this June, features over 100 newFinal Fantasy-themed cards, starring fan-favorite characters from across the franchise. The cards in this crossover will be part of a fully draftable, standard-legal set, which will be accompanied by four pre-constructed Commander Decks. Each of these decks is going to be based on one particular game in theFinal Fantasyfranchise.

Wizards of the Coast revealed a few weeks ago thatFinal Fantasy 6,Final Fantasy 7,Final Fantasy 10, andFinal Fantasy 14would receive their ownMagic: The GatheringCommander Decksas part of this collaboration. The employees at the company shared a few reasons as to why they chose these four games in particular.FF14andFF7, they said, were selected because they’re some of the most recognizable entries in the entire series. Meanwhile,FF6andFF10were picked for the collaboration simply because these titles are their personal favorites. Although it’s great to see the characters from these games get their own cards, there is oneFinal Fantasytitle that’s conspicuously missing from thisMagic: The Gatheringcrossover.

Final Fantasy 9 is Surprisingly Not Getting its Own MTG Commander Deck

Rumors Suggest that a Final Fantasy 9 Remake is in Development

In the last few years, there have been reports that Square Enix is working on a remake ofFinal Fantasy 9, the hit turn-based JRPG on the PS1.Final Fantasy 9is, as many may know, one of the most beloved titles in the entire series, up there with the likes ofFinal Fantasy 7. AlthoughFinal Fantasy 9did receive a remasteron modern platforms a few years ago, that version of the game was essentially the exact same as its original counterpart. This rumored remake, however, is supposedly going to give the game a major graphical overhaul, potentially on par with theFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketrilogy.

TheFinal Fantasy 9remake became a hot topic again a few weeks ago when Square Enix launched a new website dedicated entirely tocommemoratingFF9’s 25th anniversary. This website, which is currently only available in Japanese, mentions that the company is planning to reveal variousFF9-related projects in the coming months, such as merchandise and collaborations, in honor of the game’s June 04, 2025 release. AFF9picture book is apparently going to come out this year in Japan, alongside aFF9anniversary lottery, a pair ofFF9-themed glasses, and aFF9soundtrack vinyl. Interestingly, though, there is no mention of anyMagic: The Gathering-related crossovers for the game.

The Lack of an MTG Commander Deck for FF9’s Rumored Remake Seems Like a Missed Opportunity

If Square Enix is really working ona remake ofFinal Fantasy 9, it would’ve made sense for the company to release aMTGCommander Deck based on the game as part of its collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, especially considering that this year isFF9’s 25th anniversary. However, it seems that the company isn’t interested in doing this, which is a bit disappointing.

Given the festivities that Square Enix is hosting overFinal Fantasy 9’s 25th anniversary in Japan, one would normally think that the launch of the game’s remake is near. Unfortunately, though, no rumors suggest that the game is close to completion. The trusted insider NateTheHate said back in February thattheFF9Remake is not targeting a 2025 launchand will likely come out in 2026 instead. If this information is actually true, then the most thatFF9fans can hope for this year is an announcement of the remake. Square Enix is going to attend Summer Game Fest next week, so maybe it will show up and unveil the game for the first time there.
