Summary

Final Fantasy 14has just dropped its 7.25 update, adding the Occult Crescent, new weapons, and new armor, but there’s already been a problem discovered, as the new equipment isn’t fitting some races properly. Unfortunately, this just adds to the list of issues that select playable races have inFinal Fantasy 14right now.

Final Fantasy 14has gradually expanded the number of playable races in the game, with Viera and Hrothgar being added back during the Shadowbringers expansion, though male Viera and female Hrothgar were added at later dates. While many fans love playing as these races, there are some unfortunate limitations imposed upon them, namely with regard to how gear works. Players expressed concern early on that anew Berserker helmet would be invisible on Hrothgar and Viera, and now new issues have arisen regarding gear from the 7.25 update.

Final Fantasy 14player Mogrymilian has pointed out an issue with their Hrothgar and the newest armor in the game. While Hrothgar and Viera have previously complained that many of the game’s hats and headpieces aren’t visible for them, in this case, the issue is how the headgear “fits” on the character. In the screenshot, one can readily see that the new Arcanaut’s Sugarloaf Hat of Casting is floating above their character’s head. Only the very edge of the hat makes contact on one side, and to make matters worse, the hat is visibly clipping through their hairstyle. The fan notes in their post that they’re on the verge ofusing a Fantasiato change their race due to the continued cosmetic issues with Hrothgar.

Final Fantasy 14 Players Are Tired of Cosmetic Limitations

Unfortunately, this is just the latest in headaches surrounding certain races not being able to wear headgear. The reason behindFinal Fantasy 14’shead gear being invisible when equipped to Viera or Hrothgaris due to the shapes of their heads and the existence of their ears, which would require altering the mesh of the equipment from other races in order for it to look right on them. Even so, some players have pointed out that floating hats have been a problem with other races in the past as well, including the Miqo’te. The floating seems to largely be due to a compatibility issue between the equipment and the hairstyles available in the game.

Considering how long Viera and Hrothgar have been inFF14, fans are discouraged that so many items are still off-limits for them. Some have pointed out that modders have been able to resolve this situation, and question why Square Enix hasn’t done the same. Given that Yoshi-P has said that making new races is hard and thatfemale Hrothgarwould likely be the last one added as a playable race, some have maintained hope that the team might go back and fix some hats to make them usable by all races. Whether this turns out to be the case, though, remains to be seen.
