Summary
While Cliffhanger Games’Black Panthertitle is no longer in development, EA is reassuring fans that its multi-project partnership with Marvel is still going strong. Earlier this week, EA announced that it was canceling itsBlack Panthervideo game and shutting down developer Cliffhanger Games. The Seattle-based developer was formed shortly before work onBlack Pantherbegan, and its closure could leave a considerable number of employees out of work.
Black Pantherwasn’t the only Marvel-based video game in development at EA. Back in 2022, EA announced that Motive Studios, the developer who made 2023’sDead Spaceremake, was working on anIron Mangame. Not many details have been shared since, but recent rumors hint that it will utilize the armored Avenger’s flight abilities in open-world levels. However, thesudden cancellation ofBlack Pantherhas understandably left some gamers questioning the future ofIron Manand any other Marvel titles EA has in its pipeline, especially since it came so soon after other high-profile projects like Respawn Entertainment’s unannouncedTitanfallextraction shooter were scrapped.
EA recently addressed these concerns in a statement sent toIGN. In it, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele stated that her company’s partnership with Marvel remains “strong,” and that their “multi-title, long-term collaboration continues.” A different statement from Marvel backs this up by saying that EA and Marvel are still committed to their goal of delivering “original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters” through video games on PC and consoles, starting withMotive’sIron Mantitle.
EA and Marvel Are Still Working on Three Games
The Marvel representative also confirmed that there are still at least three video games planned at EA, though they declined to share any further details at this time. This deal was first announcedalongside theIron Mangamein 2022, with Cliffhanger’s now-canceledBlack Panthertitleeventually confirmed a year later.
Black Panther’s cancellation and Cliffhanger’s closure were just the latest in a series of reshufflings at EA, with the publisher reportedly refocusing its efforts toward a smaller list of proven franchises likeBattlefieldandThe Sims. In the meantime, concept art for theBlack Panthergamehas been leaked online, giving eager gamers a look at what the ultimately unproduced superhero title’s plot and in-game environments might have been like. As for the character of Black Panther himself, players will be able to step into the role of the Azzuri incarnation inMarvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which is currently set to launch sometime next year.
