Summary
Publisher EA has finally acknowledged the massiveStar Wars Battlefront 2player resurgence, but just not in the way that fans were hoping for. WithStar Wars Battlefront 2’s player count continuing to soar to new heights after eight years, many players are hoping that EA will officially green-light a new entry in the series. Unfortunately, the studio’s official response has been somewhat lackluster, as it has simply urged more people to jump into battle.
After releasing for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017,support forStar Wars Battlefront 2came to an end in 2020. While the shooter had a controversial launch, it received high praise from players after EA drastically altered the game’s progression system and toned down the intrusive microtransactions. Although DICE, the development studio behind the rebooted series, pitched a third entry in the series to EA, it was apparently rejected due to licensing costs. DICE has since gone on to continue the iconicBattlefieldseries, but a recent surge inStar Wars Battlefront 2players has the community begging EA to green-light a third entry in the series.
EA Finally Acknowledges Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Player Resurgence
AfterStar Wars Battlefront 2experienced a massive player spikelast month, the community has been eagerly anticipating EA’s response to the situation. Unfortunately, the first official word from the studio is somewhat lackluster, but it does show that EA is fully aware of what’s happening. In a new post on the official EA Play Twitter account, the studio said thatBattlefront 2"is the talk of the galaxy." It then urged fans to join EA play and see what all the fuss is about. While there’s no denying that EA is fully aware of the game’s player resurgence, it’s clear that it would rather use it to promote EA Play, instead of addressing fans' requests to makeStar Wars Battlefront 3.
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise though, as EA has - without actually outright stating it - made it clear thatStar Wars Battlefront 3isn’t going to happen anytime soon. In the final days of May, it was revealed that EA had canceled its highly anticipatedBlack Panthergame. A report fromIGNrevealed that EA was now solely focusing on a handful of its most iconic franchises, andStar Wars Battlefrontwas not one of them. While Respawn’sStar Wars: Jediseries is still being supported by EA, the studios only other franchises will beBattlefield,The Sims,Skate, andApex Legends, as well as Motive’s unreleasedIron Mangame. Although these plans could certainly change in the future, it’s clear that a third entry in the series won’t be happening anytime soon.
What’s most upsetting about EA’s refusal to green-light a third entry is that the originalStar Wars Battlefront 2devs are on board for a third game. Shortly after the game’s unexpected resurgence, a former developer took to Reddit and revealed that he and his former colleagues “want to get the gang back together” for anotherBattlefrontgame. Sadly, the decision to develop another game resides withBattlefront’s rights owner, EA, and they don’t seem to be in any rush to give fans what they want.
