Dungeons and DragonsandWorld of Warcraftgo hand-in-hand, with the former acting as a major inspiration to the latter during its first inception. ThenameWarcraftitself was even inspired by aD&Dcharacterplayed by former Blizzard senior art director Samwise Didier. FromWorld of Warcraftclasses like the Paladin and spells like Cone of Cold, sharp-eyed fans can easily find homages toDungeons and Dragonsall over Azeroth.
Now, one artist is making a collaboration between these two franchises of their own.Dungeons and Dragonsplayer,World of Warcraftfan, and aspiring Blizzard artist Yagiz Kani recently shared the first part of a custom Monster Manual featuring creatures of Azeroth. Shared on their personal Twitter and ArtStation, this project includes 13 differentWorld of Warcraftcreatures, each with custom illustrations andDungeons and Dragonsstats. Warlock minions like the Imp, Felhoud, Voidwalker, and Infernal, humanoid races like the Kobold, Quilboar, and Murloc, and even the infamous Hogger, Scourge of Elwynn, are just some of the denizens found within the first part of this fan-madeDungeons and DragonsMonster Manual.
Fan-Made World of Warcraft D&D Monster Manual
Kani made sure to emphasize that, while they have playedDungeons and Dragons, they are neither a game designer nor a dungeon master. These stat blocks are derived from esthetics and vibes first, rather than with concern for game balance. Even so, DMs who wished to use theseWorld of Warcraftmonsters in their ownD&Dgames could easily use them as a solid starting point.
This is only the first of many parts Kani has planned for this personalWoWMonster Manual project. They are already making plans for a part two, which will feature someiconicWorld of Warcraftclasses, on top of more creatures and races.
Beyond this project, Kani has created tons of other pieces of 2D and 3D fan art, includingMarvel Rivalscharacter concepts, the Dragon Slayer sword fromBerserk, andCloud’s Buster Sword fromFinal Fantasy 7rendered inWoW’s iconic style. Professionally, they have also served as the lead concept artist and lead texture artist ofWay of Kings, a tower defense mobile game developed by Gameflex. Gamers interested in seeing what they create next should be sure to keep an eye on theirArtStation portfolio.
