Is Dragon Ball Daima Canon?

Dragon Ball Daimais generally considered canon since Akira Toriyama was said to be deeply involved in its production. According to producer Akio Iyuko, he wrote most of the story, even though he would originally just serve as a consultant.Daimais supposed to take place between the end of the Majin Buu Saga andDragon Ball Super. However, there are minor inconsistencies betweenDaimaand Super, which made some fans feel that it makes more sense for the series to take place in an alternate timeline — which would mean that theDragon Ballmultiverse is canon.

He had a strong sense of the Dragon Ball world, and he would change his focus depending on the work, but he wouldn’t force anything into the setting. The plot is also important, and since there is no original manga for this anime, we were aware that we had to “pull” it out like a manga.

— Akio Iyuko

In fact, Akio Iyuko seems to have hinted at this possibility in one interview. IfDaimaandSuperare canonically set in different universes, this means thatDragon Ball GT, movies, and even fillers could also be canon. However, for now, the official information is that the original manga,Daima, andSupertake place in the same timeline. Maybe it is time forDragon Ballfans to leave debates over canonicitybehind and simply enjoy the numerousDragon Ballcontent as they are.

Dragon Ball Daimais available on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu in the US. Crunchyroll recently added anEnglish-dubbed version of the series.
