Disneyrecently shared more details about the upcomingCars Land,which will open in the Frontierland area of theMagic Kingdomin a few years. The new area, which takes inspiration from the 2014 filmPlanes: Fire & Rescue, was announced in August 2024. More information should emerge in the coming months, since construction will begin this summer.
According to Disney, this will be the largest expansion in thehistory of Magic Kingdom. The new area is calledPiston Peak National Park, and it is based on the fictional National Park of the same name featured in the movie. To make way for construction, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will close beginning on July 7. Disney also added that the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is currently closed for renovations, will reopen next year.
Disney Parks Blogshared an artistic concept showing what Piston Peak National Park will look like. This themed land is being built using Parkitecture, a style of architecture developed by the National Park Service that aims to create buildings that blend with the natural environment. Piston Peak National Park will serve as a “natural barrier” separating Frontierland and Liberty Square, a completely different approach compared to Cars Land at Disney California Adventure.
What’s in Store for Piston Peak National Park
Building a National Park inside one of its own parks may be one of the boldest moves Disney Experiences has ever made. Two major attractions have already been confirmed:Cars Road Rally and a race attraction that has yet to be named— this last one should be similar to Tomorrowland Speedway. Piston Peak will also feature several locations inspired by the Cars franchise, including Ranger HQ and a visitor lodge. While no opening date has been announced, fans expect the area to open in 2027 or 2028.
Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers. While fictional, Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks.

Piston Peak was announced at D3 Expo 2024 in Brazil alongside another new area, which will be based on several Disney villains, including the Queen of Hearts, Jafar, Maleficent, and Cruella de Vil, among others. Disney has yet to announcemore details on Villains Land, including an opening date, so fans should keep an eye for further announcements.
In addition to the areas and attractions closing due to the construction of Piston Peak, July will also mark the debut ofDisney Starlight: Dream the Night Awayat Magic Kingdom. The brand-new nighttime parade will debut on June 21, 2025, and lots of exclusive merch and food will be available at the park to celebrate the occasion.
