It’s now or never, as the demon slayer who fans remembered as dainty and seedy has been changed forever. Gone was the Zenitsu, whose smile radiated an entire room, and he would only get it back the moment he achieved his goal. Guided by a mysterious letter, he has to face reality and accept his destiny inDemon Slayer.
What Is Written Inside Zenitsu’s Letter?
Jigoro Kuwajima’s Shocking Fate
Zenitsu is one of themost loved characters inDemon Slayerdue to his unique personality, funny antics, and lightning-fast breathing style. He has many memorable moments throughout the manga, but many fans remember him for his overly dramatic behavior, exaggerated crying, and pathetic mindset. So, when he lost his smile and his weak-mindedness during the Hashira Training arc, fans knew something major had happened to him.
True enough, a letter addressed to Zenitsu changed him instantly. As it turns out, the letter’s contents brought devastating news, so shocking itleft Zenitsu permanently scarred. No one knows, not even Tanjiro, about Zenitsu’s letter before the Infinity Castle fight, making it seem he’s unstable to fight. However, he proves all his doubters wrong, as the letter played a huge part in his final fight.
If you hadn’t turned into a demon, Gramps wouldn’t have killed himself!—Zenitsu to Kaigaku
According to the letter,Zenitsu’s master, Jigoro Kuwajima, took his own life to show responsibility for his disciple’s actions. Upon learning Kaigaku has turned into a demon, he slits down his stomach, without anyone interfering, to decapitate his head. This means he had a slow and agonizing death, blaming himself for his disciple’s sins. Zenitsu took this incident very seriously, motivating him to deal with Kaigaku once and for all.
The Relevance of Zenitsu’s Letter
It Foreshadows Zenitsu’s Infinity Castle Fight
The contents of Zenitsu’s letter foreshadow his confrontation withKaigaku in the Infinity Castle arc. From the beginning, Zenitsu and Kaigaku were destined to fight each other not just to settle their differences but also to prove who was the rightful successor of Thunder Breathing. Jigoro’s death is the final push Zenitsu needed to face reality and confront his past once and for all.
Without the letter, fans might have gotten a different Zenitsu, someone who’s still afraid to fight demons when conscious, especially against Kaigaku, who was justpromoted to Upper MoonSix. While Jigoro’s death is unfortunate, it motivated Zenitsu to complete a new Thunder Breathing form just in time to catch Kaigaku off guard. Back then, he could only use the first form, whereas Kaigaku could use all known forms except for the first one.
I have no intent to reflect on what I did. I don’t care—Kaigaku to Zenitsu
Moreover, Jigoro’s death deeply angered Zenitsu, who has all the right to hate Kaigaku. After all,Kaigaku never showed any respectfor their master, believing that it was only right for Jigoro, someone who never accepted him for who he is and treated him wrong, to die a painful death. This disrespect, on top of Jigoro’s untimely demise, broke something inside Zenitsu, leaving him with no choice but to exact payback.
Who Wins?
What the Demon Slayer Manga Reveals
Unlike the prolonged fights of the many demon slayers in the Infinity Castle arc,Zenitsu and Kaigaku’s battledidn’t last long. Zenitsu wins against Kaigaku by using a new form of Thunder Breathing, decapitating the demon’s head in an instant. Just because Kaigaku became an upper moon, winning against Zenitsu is already guaranteed. Zenitsu proves him wrong, and just like that, Kaigaku dies.
Despite Zenitsu’s victory, he still blames himself for the tragic fate of both Jigoro and Kaigaku inDemon Slayer. He believes that if it weren’t for him, the people he cares about would not have suffered. Fortunately, Jigoro appears before Zenitsu in what seems like a dream, where he tells him he is his pride and joy.
