What Makes Kokushibo Such a Compelling Villain

The Upper Rank One is a Ruthless Monster

Kokushibo, Upper Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki, is one of the oldest demons alive after Muzan and Tamayo. Probably born sometime in the Sengoku era, he was one of the first people to accept Muzan’s offer to turn himself into a demon, driven by a ruthless desire to become strong. In the following centuries, he presumably killed countless people and demon slayers, amassing incomparable power for himself in the process.

I will stop your bleeding. Humans are so fragile. However… if you bleed to death… or if his lordship doesn’t approve of you… and you die… then death was always your fate. In that case… you were no greater a man than that. Don’t you… agree?

Demon Slayer

By the time Tanjiro and his friends joined the Demon Slayer Corps, Kokushibo was thestrongest demon alive after Muzan. Since the Upper Moons rarely die, it can be assumed that he probably achieved his position several decades ago and ruthlessly defended it against other demons who wished to be in his position. This can be further inferred from his dialogues in his debut episode titled “Someone’s Dream.”

Focused on Muzan’s meeting with Upper Moons after a century, it also captures a brief, violent confrontation between Akaza and Doma in which the former punched the latter’s head off. While Doma wanted to ignore the incident, Kokushibo immediately sprung into action to cut Doma’s arm off. He went on to argue that he can’t let any insubordination slide, perhaps concerned that it might sow the seed of chaos and discord. The incident gives further credence to the idea that Kokushibo is extremely strict about maintaining order in Twelve Kizuki.

Kokushibo’s inflexibility is an obvious sign that he is protective of his position as the Upper Rank One. Despite his warning and intimidating aura, Akaza still reminds him that he will kill him. But it’s quite evident thatthe Upper Rank Threestands no chance against Kokushibo, or he might have taken his place. The meeting paints a grim picture of theinternal politics in Twelve Kizuki, where every demon is for himself, driven by an unquenchable thirst for power.

But despite being surrounded by so many rivals, Kokushibo has protected his position, which speaks volumes about his powers and abilities. While he has barely made any appearances, it seems that the Upper Rank One is accustomed to using violence to get what he wants. The mystery surrounding him just makes him an exciting villain who fans would love to see more.

The Upper Rank One Will Steal the Limelight in Infinity Castle Movie

Kokushibo’s Impact Will Have a Huge Impact on the Infinity Castle Arc

As mentioned above,Kokushibo has barely made any appearancessince his debut. It’s strange that fans know so much about Muzan, but his strongest underling and his life are still shrouded in mystery. While his brief debut does offer fans an understanding of how the demon operates, it is still not enough to draw concrete conclusions about his nature or his past.

In the Infinity Castle arc, as the Demon Slayer Corps face Muzan’s underlings, Kokushibo’s true nature will finally be revealed. Until now, only glimpses of his strength have been shown in the anime. But as the demon slayers challenge Muzan, Kokushibo will stand in their path as an impenetrable wall. While the Demon Slayer Mark might have helped against other members of the Twelve Kizuki, the Upper Rank One will prove it to be on a whole different level.

Kokushibo will seriously injure the demon slayer who confronts him first. Luckily, soon three Hashira, along with Genya, will attack the demon together. Even then, Kokushibo will appear almost invincible. His swordsmanship alone will allow him to overpower some of the best Hashira of the Taisho era. What will make him truly terrifying is the speed with which he can move. Despite having trained for years, even the Hashira will struggle to keep up with him.

Wonderful… The pefect physical form developed to the upmost… How long has it been since I’ve set my eyes on such a great swordsman? Perhaps 300 years? ~ Kokushibo to Gyomei

Kokushibo’s battle with Genya, Sanemi, Gyomei, and Muichirowill definitely be the headline of the Infinity Castle trilogy. It will expose the true extent of the demon’s moral corruption and the brutality he is willing to unleash to get what he wants. Each moment in the fight will be exciting and unmissable, showcasing how talented each combatant has transformed themselves into through years of training. But in all the chaos, Kokushibo’s malice will consume the battlefield.

The Hashira may have fought many brave battles, but facing Kokushibo will send shivers down their spine, acquainting them with the true nature of evil. While Doma and Akaza will surely have their impact, Upper Rank One will steal the limelight.
